I screwed up
« on: March 03, 2005, 08:39:40 PM »
Well, I went and did it. I was doing some work on the B12 in teh garage and needed a little room so I removed the muffler from the midpipe. Then I read teh manual and it said not to do this as there is no replacement for the seal between the two. Has anyone else had this happen and what suggestions for a replacement do they have?
Thanks

I swear I've seen replacement gaskets for that issue. Check HOLESHOT.COM.

Since some of the aftermarket cans bolt onto the midpipe, someone's got to have a gasket for that... but I doubt it's Holeshot since their cans come with a new midpipe that has a different type fit at that junction.

I'll defer to the master but I know I've seen one somewhere. I'll look around. If I come up with a source,I'll let you know.

Just some pondering outloud...
There's not some sort of high temp, tube gasket sealer stuff that may work?

There is!  I have it marked in my DK catalog for my next order.  Their web site is such a mess to find anything, I can't provide a link but it does exist...

If there's nothing more posted by tonight, I'll look it up by the part no. for ya.

Permatex Ultra Copper - any auto parts store.

Smear a thin layer on both sides of the original gasket (one side if it's still stuck to the can) and bolt 'er back together.

You should also be able to get some high temp, exhaust quality, gasket paper from an auto parts store and make your own gasket.

I just happened to see this again in my DK catalog.  There is a better pic there than on line.  I could be wrong but it looks like you wrap it around the male end of the pipe and it goes inside the female end to make a seal.  Man... there's something just not right about that explanation!

The gasket you refer to is basically just a flat lead & fibre mesh type material that wraps around the pipe & compresses slightly when you tighten up the clamp. You can find this at an automotive store, but you may have to trim to fit.

I do know that Honda sells it for any of the 1983 Intervceptor series bikes, but I would 1st check an automotive store.

Errr...yeah...I think they come in different flavors and colors.  Some are ribbed, some pre-lubed, etc.  Don't know if they'll fix your exhaust though.

You can go to your auto parts store (Autozone, Schucks, etc.) and get your self sond High temp gasket gasket maker.

I use Permatex High-temp, which is specifically made for exhausts. It's the one that's black.
It's good to be free!
