Long Distance Rider (Part 2)

If you saw the first episode of “Long Distance Rider” you may have noticed that I was going to tell you what kind of fuel mileage change came from going up one tooth in the front on a 1200. Well here it is……

First Hundred miles, stop and go for 40 miles then never below 80 mph. 48 4 MPG
Second hundred miles, mostly 85 to 90 mph. Susie was leading !  48.2 MPG
Third hundred miles, stop and go mountain riding up and down!   47.3 MPG
Fourth hundred miles, 65 to 80mph! 48.9 MPG
Fifth Hundred miles, 65 to 80 mph! 48.8 MPG

This is the first time since I’ve owned the bike that I’ve seen 200 miles on the tripometer before refuling. Also, noticeably less vibration at high speeds. I could probably get better mileage if I did the speed limit. NAW!!!!!!!!!! That’s not happening!!

Mileage before sprocket and chain replacement 40 to 43 MPG at best.

Bike Mods. Full Yosh exhaust system, jet kit, heavy-duty muffler bearings and summer air in the tires. Big silly grin on my face !!

What effect did it have on

1.  Rev's at say 100km (60mph)
2.  Performance around town - low speed, stop/go etc
3.  Did you find that you needed to use your gears more or less to  maintain speed on hilly roads.

1. At 50 mph (80km) I’ve got 2500 on the tach.

2. This is an interesting question because the first time I rode it around town after the change I was in 4th gear wondering why there wasn’t much difference in the gear change (I thought I was in 5th). It sounded and felt like I was in 5th gear but I was only in 4th. (In town I just go by the sound and feel I don’t usually look at the tach or speedo.) To my surprise when I shifted to 5th it was so smooth. No high revs, no vibration. The pick up is still there don’t worry.

3. As for performance. I have noticed no difference. It still takes off like a scalded dog and shifting in the mountains was the same as before, mostly 3rd and 4th gears.

4. The only thing I haven’t tried yet is the wheelies. But they mostly happened by accident before !!!!

If you do a lot of long distance riding this is the ticket.

Mike, I noticed the wheelies are still there. It's just a little less scary/abrupt. Although I did manage to just about loop the thing last thursday night. :banana:  :duh:

That mileage is pretty Impressive.  at 80 Mph, Im lucky to get 40 mpg.  Then again I have a 14 in the front.  As soon as the chain starts stretching, Im going to put on a 15.  With the 14, the acceleration is idiotic, but the mileage/vibration at 85-90 mph sucks.
