I have had this odd problem on my bike ('96 600s) for a little while. It acts like it is running out of gas when it has gas. I switch to reserve and it goes away, then goes back. I run it in priming mode to get home.

I check the petcock, perfectly clean, internals look fine. On the '96 there wasn't an inline fuel filter after the tank.

Any ideas? I can't ride long distances at all.

Check to see if you have a vacuum line running to your petcock. If you do be sure that it is not kinked or obstructed.

I checked it out. One of the clips on the ends was stretched a bit, and the other end didn't have a clip.

But this doesn't explain why I would have pressure sometimes, and not all the times.

If the vacuum line is in poor condition or has a porr connection, it could be leaking the vacuum needed to hold the petcock open in the ON & RES positions. If the line is in good shape and you're not leaking vacuum from the connections, that pretty much leaves the diaphragm as the only other culprit if it runs fine in PRI.

It might be a misdiagnosis of another problem. While riding a tad today, I noticed a hesitation around 4,000 RPM.

So what causes hesitations?

From engines 101:
Ignition or carburation... unless it's a factory induced issue from cam design.
