oil in this place?
« on: April 15, 2008, 01:20:53 PM »
Hello,

I was adjusting my valves and took the cover off the spark generator (I am not sure if it's the right term) as it says in the repair manual to turn the engine using the 19mm nut.
I saw there was some oil in that area. Is this normal?  I know there is a gasket on the cover but I thought it's maybe only to protect against dust and dirt.  I would think there are seals so oil won't infiltrate out?
I am not sure if this makes sens to you.
I'd like to know if it's normal, if not I would bring it to the dealer since it's still under warranty.

You mean the smaller engine cover on the right side of the bike?  Ya there will be a bit of oil behind there, thats alright.  I'm pretty sure thats the side the oil temp gauge is in as well.  Should be a little round metal piece.

+1 on that being normal... also, don't forget to add a little dab of sealent on the case halves before putting the cover back on.  The factory manaul has a picture of where to put it.

FWIW.... it's SIGNAL generator.   :stickpoke:

Thanks guys.

Candyman...it has an oil temp gauge? I don't think my 2005 has one. Maybe it's only the 2007 and up? Unless I am mistaken which is more than probable.

txbanditrydr...you are right about signal generator....sorry I am at work so I got to right fast and I threw the first term that came to my mind. I also did not put the sealant. I'll check if it leaks. I was in a rush to put it back together and did not have any onhand

I thought the oil light was like in cars meaning it blinks if the oil pressure drops too low? Maybe I am confused....Does it blink if temp OR pressure are abnormal?

At least now I know where it sits.  I hope I won't have to apply that knowledge!
