Hi,
I just got my 2005 Bandit 1200s as a brand new leftover. I got it last Thursday and am now at the 600 mile mark (a bit less)
My previous bike was a KLR650 on which I was doing maintenance myself.

Right now I would like to do the valve adjustment myself but don't have a manual yet and my delaership is closed. I also looked and searched everywhere for instructions on valve adjustment but I am not able to find anyth8ing, I spent the last 2-3 hours looking for info. I found some info on the first generation but that does not help me much. I am stucked right now at taking the whole fairing off
Does anyone have instructions on valve adjustment?

well, I might have found a place where to download it finally. I thought 2001 models had a different fairing than the 2006. It seems to be the same more or less from the pics I got from the net

Well the 2005 fairing is the same... not sure about the 2006 as posted above..

Also... check THIS SITE OUT for some good info on valve adjusts.

Thanks, I ended up by downloading the upt to 2001 manual. But meanwhile I find answer how to take off the fairing by looking at the detailed procedure of the guy who replaced his screen.

Anyways I checked half the valves (first camshafts position) and I think only 2 are in the middle of the spec, the rest are tighter than the spec.

Until now I only managed to break 1 small tab that locates the left side of the fairing:duh: , not too bad...knock on wood so nothing bad happens.

On the '01-'05 1200, you don't need to remove the fairing!
Just remove the gas tank and the breather cover (rectangular unpainted piece in the middle of the valve cover) and the valve cover can be removed out either side.

IIRC, Bill's instructions would have you pulling the carbs and there's no need for that either.

I thought you don't have to remove the fairing but it was said that with the fairing it would be more difficult. Truth is after removing the righ hand bracket for the fairing the valve cover came out easier and I managed not to rip the gaskets for the spark plug towers yet. We'll see what happens during reaasembly.

I don't know why he would recommend to remove the carbs but that would be a REAL pain

That is correct, you do not need to remove the carbs. But if you leave the carbs on, you will need to remove the breather cover. I prefer to remove the carbs since it only takes me about 5 minutes with out the air box and 10 minutes with.

It will probably take me 1 hour to remove the carbs so I would rather take the breather cover off. It's faster for me

Didja buy it in Laval?

Just so you know, when I brought my bike in for its 1000k checkup they found my valves weren't properly adjusted...

No i did not buy it there. I actually went to see moto de Laval, I am not sure about the name but it's those that are not toof ar from Monette Sports. I went for a wee strom initially but the prices were higher than I expected and they were also giving me less money than what I expected for my KLR.
I bought it from colette sport previously known as Varennes Sports or motorsports(something like that) in Ste Julie.
Just out of curiousity would you mind telling me the cost of the first maintenance? I expected to pay around 300 bucks so that's why I told myself iw ould rather do it myself. Besides, every time I go to a garage something happens even if people say that garage is the best, just my unlucky star.

And like you say, the valves were all out of adjustment besides 2.
By the way which year did you buy and where are you from?

Hey there,

I'm thinking about doing the valve adjustment myself pretty soon here, and I was hoping to get some advice on what works and doesn't. This will be the first real maintenance job i'll be doing on my bike, so I'm somewhat apprehensive and just would like to be prepared.

If you could throw me some advice it would be much appreciated.

And, BTW, this is turning into an All MTL forum!!
