Mechanical noise at low rpm?
« on: July 23, 2006, 03:37:01 PM »
I bought an 02 1200S last year w/ 6k mi. I'm now at 10.3k mi. I also picked up an unwanted new noise since a trip to NC/TN a few weeks ago. At low rpm, 1200-1500 there is a mechanical noise that you can hear and almost feel; almost like a gear is catching. But I'm not overly familiar with my options. It does it while in neutral, so its not chain related. It goes away as soon as the rpms increase. Usually is not there at 1000 rpm.

Any suggestions?

BTW, western NC/eastern TN have some nice roads...put it on your 'to do list'

Tim

Thanks, I've heard this several times now.  I'm having the bike checked out tomorrow before taking it up to NH/ME.  I had to cancel on the CA Superbike School, but I'll take a look at the roads in NH and ME.

I appreciate your help.  Who the heck is tanner?

Just curious... why are you running your bike at 1000 rpm?
1200-1300 is normal idle.

I lowered the idle to find out if the 'noise' would go away or get worse... it went away.

It seems the noise is actually coming from the carb.  ??  I wouldn't have guessed that.  I'll get a better description of the problem and post it.

I won't do anything about it yet.  After we do a trip up in NH and ME, I'll take it in for some work.

Well, the cam chain adjuster sits between carbs 2 & 3...

I have a 97 with over 100 K  , and it has all kinds of little noises, But sometime back I had a noise come from around the carbs that got me thinking something was wrong , tracked it down to the alternater ,  removed the alternater and it was gone got another one from Ebay and fixed it for a while now I think it is doing the same thing , not going to worry about it this time , but its something you could check if the shop does not find something , Don't let them go to deep without checking this
out!!!!!

Most all of the oil cooled motors made a noise :bigok:
