Oil Cooler & Carbs
« on: January 08, 2010, 06:44:17 PM »
OK, I have another question. I used a high pressure washer to clean my bike and I noticed that some of the outer fins on the oil cooler have been pushed in. The center core is OK. Will I have a oil cooling problem with this?

Also while I'm at it, I warm up the bike for at least 5 minutes before I ride, but when riding and as I throttle up the engine boggs down. After 5 minutes or so or riding, it clears up. I've had the plugs changed and advised the technitians when serviced, but I still have the same results when I get the bike back. Is this normal? I live in South Florida.

 :thanks:

Even in Winter, it gets to below 0c here, I don't warm my 02B12 up for that long. You could be fouling your plugs.  I'd cut the warm up time to less than 2 minutes, even less if the ambient temp is 15c or more.

Thanks, Mick. My bike has always had this problem. The techs said that was common with Bandits. Last week I started the bike after it had sat for 2 months. It was really hard to start, even with the choke. When it did start it ran very rough. I sprayed water on the headers and found the the water steamed off on the two iside headers, but ran doen the pipe on the two outside headers. I took it out for a ride and after 2 to 3 minutes of the odd backfire or misfire, it cleared up.

That still sounds like fouled plugs, but it could also be a fuelling problem.  There are more mechanical adept guys here who should be able to help.

You should check if you get spark on the two plugs when the bike is cold. You could have a bad contact on one of the two ignition coils (I think the left one for cyl. 1 and 4) when the bike is cold.

I had a similar problem with the 400

Hey bobsbandit

1st question. As long as the majority of the fins (by surface area) are decent, you shouldn't have any issues with the oil cooler doing it's job. I wouldn't be too concerned. If you have a careful hand, you can straighten out some of the fins with a pair of needle nose pliers...just be very careful. Anyway, not really something to get too concerned about.

2nd question - the 600 & 1200 Bandits are jetted VERY lean, so they usually take a long time to warm up. My 600 used to need at least partial choke for a full 10 minutes as well, before I rejetted it. A good jet kit will make a large difference. Otherwise, just accept the long warm up time.

Aye, they are way lean.

My 400 took over 5 minutes in Florida before I could really crack open the throttle even with a warm up. (stock pipe)

1st Gen 1200s wasn't quite so bad, 3 or 4 minutes, but I still too my sweet time putting my gear on. Again, this was Florida. (Yoshi Pipe)

2nd Gen 1200s is just pathetic here in New Mexico with the ~40 degree temps right now. 10 minutes + before I can fully kill the choke. (Delkevic Pipe) Runs 99% of perfect then. I'm gonna try installing my 1st jet kit next winter, just dealing with it until then. Figure come spring, when it warms up, it won't be so bad and she desperately needs to be driven some with some Techron in the tank. Just too cold to muck around with right now.
