Lots of talk here over time about what kind of muffler to buy, what performance you get, what fits what, etc. But I have a more basic question:

How do you know when a muffler is "used up". Other than big rusty holes, what indicates it's time for a new one?

Most are packed with fiberglass or metal wool and it gets used up over time, and gets louder. If it doesn't get louder, it doesn't need repacking.

There may be some aftermarket cans out there out there that muffle purely with baffles, like some performance car muffler makers do, but if there is one, I don't know who.

I think that kirker has the baffles. I was looking at buying one off of ebay but decided aginst it. When I do a google search to find one not a lot of options out there for distributors.

MOst mufflers can be repacked without too much problem. Even the ones that are riveted. You just drill out the rivets and re-rivet when you're done. My muzzy is riveted.

I've repacked dirt bike silencers a lot. In my younger, foolish days I would just reach up into the attic and grab some insulation. I'm wiser now and use some packing called Silent Sport. Works good, most bike shops carry it. Plus, you don't get all itchy!

Supertrapp uses a fiberglass wrapped baffle also---The discs are for "tunability" and also serve as a spark arrestor.

Didn't know that... I even had an old Honda SL100 with a Supertrapp on it, but I never took it apart.

From their how it works page they don't mention any packing, but on some of their applications pages they do mention packing...

Anyway, packed or not, adding discs will make it louder and subtracting them will make it quieter.
