oil leaks
« on: August 06, 2005, 04:04:36 PM »
I was sitting at the ATM the other day and suddenly a bunch of smoke started coming off the motor!  So I looked it over and the front of the engine has oil on it that got on the pipes.  Not enough to drip, but enough to make smoke. :wtf:

Took it into the dealer,  they put it up and found three gaskets leaking, two where the oil lines come out of the cylinder head, and the head gasket itself.  The service manager told me he's going to pull the whole motor apart and replace all the gaskets.  Fortunately, the bike is still under warrenty.

I was wondering if anyone else has run into this?  The bike only has 3k miles.  What would cause this kind of problem?

From the head, or from the valve cover gasket? If it's from the valve cover gasket, it sounds like someone didn't do a good job puttin things back together after a valve adjustment. (If they screwed up one of the gaskets at the spark plug towers, it will drain oil out near the cylinder/head interface and make you think you might have a head gasket leak.)

Actually, when I first looked at it, the valve cover gasket was my assumption as well.  However, I can see oil bubbles forming at the head gasket, so I tend to agree with the tech.
