pilot jets, other questions
« on: May 13, 2007, 08:37:05 PM »
I have searched (honest) but can't find the answer to my question.  I've been thru about 80 motorcycles over 35 yrs of riding.  I've been able to make most inline fours run pretty good by:

Setting pilot screws (usually richer than stock)
Shimming needles
Replacing pilots with one size larger
This always improves warmup and driveability at low RPMS and usually cures any surge.

Maybe the bandit 600 (2nd gen) doesn't respond to these typical changes?  My question is.........are you guys changing the stock pilots to something else and if so, what?
Thanks!!

I did NOT need to change the pilot jets in mine, just turned the air screws out approx 2-1/2 turns. (after drilling out the plugs)

I used 1 - 0.5 mm shim under each needle, with the stock main jets.

Mine is a stock 2G 600, stock air box, c/w snorkle, stock exhaust.

This helped warmup, and improved the "dead" zone between 4500-6000 rpm. The top gear roll on is better. Overall the bike runs noticably better through the whole mid range.

I usually ride from 1500 ft + above sea level.

You shouldn't need to increase the pilots unless you need to set the air screws out more than 3-1/2 turns +/-.

that's what I did.  one shim each needle, screws 2.5 turns.  bike runs great.  I'm sure some find value in the jet kits, but it seems that if you know what mains you need for a certain intake/exhaust combo you could skip the kit.
