Pods and cams
« on: December 23, 2006, 09:17:28 PM »
I need some info if anyone knows. I have a gen 2 B-12. I have Dales complete exaust system and a stage one kit. I am going to go to the stage 2 with pods and cams. My Questions are (1) Are the pods the same for a Gen 1 and Gen2 B-12? If not, does anyone know which K&N part# fits the Gen 2? (2) Does anyone know what the drop in cams on Dales site are for? I have heard 88-89 gsxr 750 and 90-91 gsxr 750. I don't know if either of these are correct. The reason I ask this is because I can get the filters and cams Quite a bit cheaper than the price on Dales site. :thanks:  Dave

I was told the HS cams are 88-89 GSXr750. The short stroke 88-89 750 motors came with the hotest OEM cams. They are in the .350 lift range.

The intake lists the same part # for 88 and 89, but the exhaust lists two different part # for each year. I did some digging when I bought mine, the 89 exhaust offers slightly more lift.

I bought my '89 cams from Ron Ayers. They really wake the motor up and open up the powerband above 6000rpm. Very pleased with the results.

Good Luck, Ed.

Free shipping and $58.00. You won't find them cheaper. I had them in my hand three days later.

www.Crotchrocket.com is sometimes a few bucks cheaper than RonAyers. That is where I got my intake from.

Hello, do you remember the part numbers of the cams you bought? I see intake as #12711-06B90 and (2) part numbers for the 89 750 exhaust #12721-17C90 and #12721-06B90.

17C90 (1989 GSXr750) is the exhaust that I have.

The only difference I recall was between the 88 and 89 exhaust cams, the intake was the same for both years. I had the local speed shop pull the specs for both 88 and 89 exhaust cams and the 89 had the greatest lift.

I am using stock springs, mine are still fresh as the motor only had 1800 miles when I installed the cams. I don't think aftermarket springs are really necessary unless you go with full .370 or greater lift aftermarket cams. I am using an APE manual tensioner though- it is cheap insurance.

The 750 cams give the bike an almost two stroke feel, it winds up very quickly and really takes off above 6000rpm. I do not really notice much lower midrange loss as the motor spins up so easily now. Also I did RS36 carbs at the same time so my evaluation includes these as well.

The K&N pod filters are the same for the 1G & 2G B12.

That is good to note on the exhaust cams.

I am willing to bet once you get it on a dyno you will see that the reason it takes off so pronounced is because you are making less power than stock between 4500-6000 rpm. Hence the sudden on rush of power. It moves the powerband up quite a bit (1-2K).

Dyno is in the future. It will be interesting to see the numbers. No doubt it is slightly down from 4500-6000, but at around 6500 it really takes off. No more running out of steam at 8500 either, she pulls hard thru 10,000. I expect peak power to be somewhere in the 9800-10,200 range.

She is so much stronger above 6500 now. I expect part of this is from the RS36's. It would have been interesting to do just the cam swap alone.

She is at 2700 miles now-I know; I have been riding the 900SS a lot lately. The dyno is waiting for decent weather and a day off work

Ed, a few weeks ago I lent my good headers and the stage 3 carbs to a mate.    I put on the stock carbs (with minor jetting changes) and the stock headers.
The bike is a slug with just the cams.   Although it will still revs out to 10500 in top , it has lost that "go like hell " zip that it used to at 6500, where it just climbed up on the rear wheel every time.

Thought I'd just pass that on !      Gaz.

Ha, hows that for a comparison. I had the Ivan's stage 1 kit prior to the cams but never tried a stage 3/pods setup. For me, the stage 1 was a waste of time and I did not want to spend more money on the stock carbs with a stage 3 kit, so I went with the RS36's.

I am running the stock header with a Yosh RS3 race can/midpipe. I figured that this might help preserve a small amount of lower midrange over a full system, but something tells me a full Yosh system is in the future   .

I would love to do runs with my above setup and then add the full exhaust to see the difference it alone makes.

I'll say one thing, after having RS36's on the B12 and Keihin FCR41's on the Ducati, I am never going back to CV carbs. Aftermarket carbs are worth the money.

Ed, the cams and the headers seemed responsible for a small loss around 4000 .  But with headwork and compression the loss was reduced.   I recommend the headers , probably worth up to 5 or 6 horses up top and of course half the weight........  Gaz.

ps. pity I'm so far away, I'd have a set of those Holeshot jobbies.
