tachometer and neutral light

I was riding to school this morning and realized that my tachometer stopped working, then when parking the neutral light wouldn't light up.  I was wondering if it is related and how to fix them both.  Thanks

I had the same problem with my 97 600.  First check the fuses.  If that doesn't work there is a thread on the next page of the 600/1200 technical called "small elctrical prbelm on a 96 bandit 600" started by my buddy Wndrr.  It has everything you need.

ok well the nuetral light isn't lighting up but the tachometer doesn't work at all.  Not the light the whole gauge, the needle doesn't move at all.

Are all the fuses ok?
What year bike is this?
If it's one where the tacho is cable driven by the front wheel (I have experience with this on other bikes..), try getting the front wheel off the floor and disconnecting this cable at the tacho. Rotate the front wheel in driving direction and see if the unplugged end of the cable turns.. If it does then you at least know the cable and wheel unit are ok.

If it doesn't rotate, disconnect the cable from the front wheel and turn the inner part of the cable by hand and see if the other end rotates again.
If not, you need a new speedo cable. If so, maybe a new front wheel speedo drive unit thingy?

Also make sure the ends fit properly back in as well and that they aren't rounded and slipping.. If they are fine, then at least you know it's the tacho end that has the problem, not the rest of it.

I'm assuming this is of course how the front wheel driven speedo system works on the earlier bandits, much like on many other bikes so hopefully this is of some help but I can't guarantee anything!  :?:

the speedo still works and it is just the tach that doesn't.  Are they run on separate cables? I have had to replace the speedo cable in the past but dont remember any other tach cable.  Where does it connect at?

ehh, I do apologise, 3:17am probably wasn't the best time to reply. I was thinking of the speedo since you said the needle didn't move, I confused myself. I'm looking into it now..

And my update is: I can't find any information specific to the tacho. It seems to be a non-servicable part itself so if it develops a problem, it has to be returned to suzuki or replaced.
On a 1st gen bandit you can get to where you replace bulbs, but I can't find any instructions other than that.
Slightly worrying that there's no troubleshooting procedure in the suzuki manual or haynes manual.. One to watch out for.
Maybe someone has experienced the same thing and can comment?

If I can find any further information, I will post.

The tach is electronic, so if it isn't working, look over your connections and make sure no wires have been rubbed raw or broken.

I had the same thing and we traced it to the wire cluster.  If you follow the link that Pitter kindly added and follow the directions in that thread I'm sure you will get it to work.  Wndrr did it for me and took him just a couple of hours to get it squared away.

just click the link pitter posted,, I bet you find the bad connection about half way between the cluster and the plug connector under the black wire cover
