Rear axle nut & 3rd party service manual
« on: July 17, 2005, 07:40:20 PM »
Anyone know off hand what the size is of the rear axle nut on an '02 1200S?

Also, are there any recommendations for a 3rd party service manual for the same bike?  I have the Suzuki Service Manual, but it is lacking in some details.  I am new to wrenching and want to learn as much as I can.

Thanks in advance!

 :thanks:

I don't remember the size off the top of my head, but if you still have the OEM tool kit, there should be a wrench in there that fits and is marked with the size so you'll know what socket you need to buy for a quality solution. Both Clymer & Haynes have manuals for thr B12, but I'll save comments on them for those that have experience with them. I just have the Suzuki one and it's been fine for my needs, but then I'm not new to wrenching on things.

Hi Paul,

Thanks so much for your suggestions!  I didn't even think to check the OEM tool kit, so I'll do that.  I saw somewhere on the list where one of the guys was using a Haynes manual.  If anyone else has input on which they prefer (Haynes or Clymer), I would appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks!

The rear axle nut is 24mm.  Holeshot makes a replacement nut and washer, but I'm not sure of the size - it might be different.

I have a Clymer manual and the factory manual and between the two of them one can usually figure out what to do.  The Clymer manual has a color coded schematic which is more helpful than the factory manual.

Both contain errors or omissions though, e.g. in the electrical section neither one correctly describes the operation of the neutral switch under the left side sprocket cover.

Both contain good information on maintenance and troubleshooting -- the Clymer version being a bit better in my opinion.

Haynes manusls often have shortcuts and diagrams of special tool applications that eliminate the need for factory tools, but I don't have the Haynes version so I can't claim that to be true for the Bandit.

Yes, the wrenching surface size of the Holeshot nut is bigger - that's a main point (so you can safely live without the cotter pin).

Thanks for everyone's input!  Is the Holeshot replacement nut and washer part of a kit, or is it sold by itself?  I didn't see it listed on Holeshot's web site.

It's sold by itself. It's listed under the "Suspension Upgrades" section, or just CLICK HERE.

Found it!  I might try that.  I'm looking forward to adding a few select mods here and there...

Thanks again!

If you buy the nut from Hole Shot you will need a 27mm socket.  That mother is huge and it comes with the washer.  I've got one and my back wheel has yet to fall off.  If I'm remembering right you don't torque it as tightly as the manual says for the stock nut.  I think you only torque the hole shot nut to 50 ft/lbs not the 90/95? ft/lbs for the stocker.
