Signal generator ?

Hi
I have been told that the signal generator, in this pic,

"runs in oil."
Well I know that my oil pressure switch leaks abit but
I positive that there shouldn't be any oil behind the signal generator cover.
Or am I wrong ?

Mine always seams really oily behind the signal generator cover.

With the cover off, like in the picture, start your engine and see what happens. Oil will run out the side, so yes, it does run in oil. :motorsmile:

Best I stop trying to fix that oil pressure switch leak  :grin:
I honestly wouldn't have know if the question about which
Dyna pickups to use hadn't come up.
Obviously when the bike is leaning on the side stand I never saw bugger all oil.
Why did the change to run it in oil.?

Change it from what?
It's probably designed that way to cut down on seals, that way they can keep the crank as narrow as possible.

Sorry....I,m an old school GS man and they never ran oil behind the points/pickup cover back in them good old days.

I'm 58 years old, and I remember the old bikes having a seal on the crank that kelp the oil from getting to the pick up. And my Norton had points, and no oil got to them. So some time during those years, when they went to electronics, they didn't need to keep that area dry.
