Speedo incorrect, reading fast.

This is ...very disturbing seeing how I was get crap mileage already, now to find out that the speedo is fast.

I live in a little more country area so I don't get much driving in con-jested high speed areas, when i am there i usually am able to speed through,  but I was near the city today on the highway and stuck in traffic when realized everyone was doing 80-90......
 

I stopped a little later plugged in my gps and watched it while i was driving and 55mph=60speedo, 90mph=100speedo. 

drivetrain is all stock..

any common problems with this? parts that could go bad? if not, how to adjust?

If it's a Gen 1 it's a common issue and there's not much you can do about because it's a mechanical drive off the front wheel. Mine's off 5 at 40 and 10 at 65 or so.  For second gens you can buy a device to correct the indicated speed.

Search for speedo healers and you should be able to find what you need.

All Bandit's speedos are off by around 10% at all speeds, not just 1st gens.

At around $100.... the Speedo Healer is a pricey fix for a minor annoyance, in my opinion.

I wish I could the glass off and install a new speedo face with the right scale.  It's nearly 10% optimistic.

Someone should print a new face and figure a way to remove the glass to install it.

You can take the speedo apart and replace the face.  Several years ago, a few members were trying to get up enough interst for one of the aftermarket face makers that advertise in the back of the m/c rags to make a 2G B12 version.  I don't know if they ever got enough interest or not - and if so, if they got them to alter the scale for correction.

I found this outfit that will at least do the custom faces for any bike.  You could ask if they can alter the numbers...

I was hoping that DW would make a face for a Gen 1 Bandit.  Basically, make the scale got to 150 rather than 170.  Not sure if I can get it apart either.

My 1g 1200 is out by way more than 10%. At 50km/h my speedo is reading roughly 60km/h (20%) but by the time I hit 140km/h my speedo is reading somewhere between 170-180 (25%), I've yet to check the odometer though.

I have seen people use regular bicycle speedos and they are accurate and you can pick them up for round 40 bucks

that's the usual fix.  I'd rather have a new speedo scale printed and installed on my speedo.
