Timing Advancer
« on: July 04, 2008, 05:14:40 AM »
Well i've read up on some of the old topics and really never thought too much about this mod, it simply went in the things to do pile. But when I got a Holeshot stage 1 kit ( :thanks: snubnose) it came with one and even though I don't think I want to pull the carbs right now to switch to a holeshot kit from the dynojet the advancer was just to easy an instal to pass up... and the test ride..
:yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes:
Maybe my bike is odd or something, but it made a fantastic difference. In fact I got my first 'beginnings of a tank slapper' when it lifted more of the front end than usual on a particularly fun turn entry (maybe it's best not to ask). As stated throttle response is improved, any kind of hesitation at 3000-4000 is gone and it pulls right to the rev limiter. Aside from getting horribly out of shape within a few minutes of starting the ride its been nothing but a great experience (okay even getting it all wrong was fun ) so far fuel economy also seems greatly improved.
Had I even had an inkling of what would happen I would have done the poor mans advancer months ago! Keep in mind that prior to this I thought the bike was running well.

So is that a 5degree advancer?

yes the holeshot 5 degree, i think if it hadn't come with the kit I would have simply done the poor mans method with a dremel.
After the first tank of gas I'm also noticing a fuel mileage improvement, which is sort of nice to see.

Whats the advancer cost on its own?, or DIY how much do you elongate the holes in the original advancer? or is it easier to mark out with a protractor to get the 5 degrees

I'm thinking of doing the 'poor man's mod' myself... because I only want to go 3 degrees of advance anyway.

if I could do it all again, I would have done the DIY mod last year when I first got the bandit, the nice thing about that is like PaulV said you don't need to go for 5 degrees you can try different set ups...
Until I get a Dyna2000 ... it seems like a good idea.

First mod I did was Yosh slip on and jets(Dynojet). Big difference!!!!!!!!! Next up was some cosmetics......then holeshot cams and ignition advance. Some power loss at the 4,000 rpm point but up for sure beyond 6,000 rpm. As in front wheel goes airbourne as easy as pie.........
Explain that to cops..........well ya see, I was just trying the jetting out.........YANNO!

Those of you with advancer, have you noticed more tendency to detonation, and have had to some times go for a higher octane fuel?

Never had to go to a higher octane fuel in mine... I run the low grade stuff all the time (87 in the US in the lower elevations).  I've had the advancer & Holeshot stage II pod kit on it for >45,000 miles.

not at all, i'm running a tank of regular through right now. There is no pinging or other strange engine stuff happening...BUT my personal G-meter seems to think it's not as powerful now. I can't be sure of course and the mind is a dangerous thing, but it most certainly runs well.

I notice some say at least 91octane, here the lowest we`ve got is 91, then 95, and then 98.   I`ve found if i use 91 here, i get detonation, i always use 98,i get better economy, i haven`t really noticed more power with it, but i DON`T LIKE DETONATION,  DETONATION BAD!

Keep in mind the US & Canada measure gas octane differently than most of the rest of the world.

The US & Canada use (RON + MON)/2.  This produces a lower number than the same gas rated by just RON.
