Bandit 1200 'Sticky' Gearbox

I've had my 2004 bandit 1200 for a couple of months- it seems to have developed a 'sticky' gearbox- especially shifting between 2nd and 3rd and 4th to 5th. It's always shifting up that gives tyhe problem and never shifting down. By 'fiddling' with the gear lever , the problem seems to reduce. Any ideas ? Do you think it's to do with simply a sticky gearshift lever or mechanism, or is it more serious ?

It might just be your oil. Changed it lately?

I would start by adjusting the shifter either up or down..... you might have it too low and it's not falling into place - or it might be too high and your foot's not lifting it up enough.  Usually it's too high unless you just purchased some new riding boots that are pretty thick.  Try "pre-loading" the shifter before shifting gears... put a little tension on it before actually pulling the clutch.  If it clicks right into gear I'd say the tranny's in good shape.

Oh... and +1 on the oil change - especially if you're close to being due.

Thanks for the feedback. Given that it's seemed to work fine until the last few days I hope the tranny's okay -  I'll try an oil change and check the adjustment of the lever as you suggest. Thanks.

+1 on preloading the shift lever as well, just put some pressure on it prior to pulling the clutch - these even smooths out older BMWs, and a good habit to have.
