the first oil change on my bike was done at 1000kms the second at6000kms.both times im certain the bike had used no oil so i was pretty happy  i have since rejetted it at 6000kms and its now done9000kms and it has now needed a top up of oil  about 300mlls worth.sunday morning early rides are the thing of about 200km distance, all on average mid range revvs.with the obvious big revvs 3 or 4 times a day.

     is there any chance that its getting way to much fuel for the type of work it does and the bores are getting glazzed up  which is going to speed up oil burning on these motors?

I don't think 300ml in 3K km is too bad... and unless you're jetted way, way, too rich, it's not going to be the cause of your oil consumption.

If you are running very rich the excess fuel will wash oil off the cylinder walls with the end result of the oil going out the tailpipe. I would check your spark plugs, they will tell all.

If they are very sooty, (black) you are running to rich.

But the consumption you are seeing is quite normal.

Bazza--- thanks,you were spot on,the plugs are sooted up to the max,another site said for a quick fix on a 2nd gen change the pilots to 27.5 which i did and i do think it runs spot on mid range and highway top gear overtaking but it clearly isn't correct so i'll change it back,

Hey Slo:

You have 27.5 pilots in a 2nd Gen?

They come stock with 15.0 pilots and the normal move is to go up to 17.5 pilots. (Typo perhaps?) 17.5's are fine 27.5's are not good.

If your running 27.5 pilots You are in no doubt runing way too rich.

1 got this direction off the FAQ chart under fuel and carburetter.it actually did run sweet as at all revs.but when i upped the mains to 110 and lifted the needles 1 clip it still runs real nice,but it showed up in its 1/4 mile time when i think top end nobody was home so mid it was sweet but red line it still ran nice but was a bit flat.so i'm checking out dexters idea.almost finished.1 up on needle 130 mains 20 3/8 in air box to move the power from mid revs to high revs and crossed fingers
