I have a 99 B12 with 11k miles on it. I bought it with about 9K on it and I decided to adjust the valves since I wasn't sure when it was done. There are a lot of mysteries with this bike. Bear with me and I will quickly touch on its history.
When I first got it, the plugs would foul out after about 200 miles or so. I thought everything was stock but when I pulled the carbs off to check them, I found them with 127.5 mains, adjustable needles, etc.. Everything that would indicate a jet kit. What kind? Who knows. I didn't mess around with setting too much. I figured with the stock exhaust, I should jet down. So I got some 112 mains and the bike ran fine after that (I left the pilot jets alone).
Since my downsize of the main jets, I have added a yosh bolt on, and did the home made 5 degree advance mod.
I decided to adjust the valves this season before I started riding a lot. So I did em'. Like the clymers book said and I checked each valve about three times. While I had the bike torn down and considering the small advances I had done, I decided to put back in the 127.5 mains. It must be the testosterone and the fact that I live only an hour from deals gap.
Anyway, I got back everything together and took it for a test ride. With the bike warmed up, it seems like my idle circuit is lean. When you blip the throttle a little ( not opening it past a 1/4) it seems to hang up at its apex and slowly drop back down to idle speed. I tried adjusting the air/fuel mixture but it didn't yield the results I was looking for.
So I guess the question is did I miss something? Can valves have an effect on your mixture? I doesn't make sense.
