Initial 600 mile (or so) service
« on: July 02, 2007, 11:07:22 PM »
Hi guys:

This Saturday July 6 my wonderful little B1250 will be going in for its first service.

I was reading in the service manual and my owners manual that the 600 mile service does not call out for valves to be adjusted, according to the chart, until 14500 miles. BUT, the service manual does call for the valves to be inspected in the text area of the book (page 05-B) and adjusted at 600 miles and every 7500 thereafter. :duh: Am I reading this wrong?? Which one is correct?

Other than that, for the guys that have been through thier first service, what did you find and what did it cost?

Thanks - Phil

I'm NOT familiar with the new 1250 at all, but I do know the 600 initial & 7500 thereafter spec is what's called out for the air-oil cooled 1200's.

Are you looking at a 1200 manual? I didn't know anyone had a 1250 service manual yet. If this is in the 1250 manual, could be this is an error left over from the older motor.

Here is the link to the manuals. The guys at the shop confirmed that valves are NOT done at 600 according to thier manual listed both in the maint chart and breakout topics in the book. I think I have an older 1250 draft copy or something. Either way, all is good.

I'll post the results of the service Saturday night (or so).

PhilS, I don't know what the dealer does on the 600 mile service since I did my own. If you document it properly and keep your receipts it will be acceptable towards the warranty.

I think I remember the valve adjustment had an "I" for "inspect", I'll have to check to make sure. But I doubt the dealer would actually take off the valve cover and physically measure valve clearances. More likely they would just listen to the top end. I used a mechanics stethoscope to listen to each valve, they are very quiet but I could hear a slight ticking in there.

This bike is a shim & bucket design and should go for a long, long time without any need for adjustment. The older Bandits were rocker-type and though easier to adjust, required it much more often.

On the valves.....it must be an old "draft" copy or a bad copy manual on Suzuki's part. No valves needed until 14500 miles!!

More posting Saturday afternoon with the details.

I also called around when i was breaking-in my B650. It stated that after 1500km the valves should be chacked. I called several dealerships and many other local shops to ask what their "after break-in service" or "1st service" includes - NONE of them talked about inspecting valves... WHen i brought it up, all told me usually around 20,000 km is when they should be inspected and adjusted.

I appreciate their honesy, and one guy even told me "look, i'd like to say that this is a 3 hour job and for you to bring your bike in, but in all honesty, you won't need to look at the valves until much greater milage"....

I guess why fix it if it ain't broken.....

Hi Guys:

I went in for my first 600 mile service today - at 840 miles.

Here's what they found:

1) All OK.

Here's what they did:

1) Oil and Filter change - nothing in the oil other than some flakes, some silicone slivers, all normal crap.
2) Lubed everything
3) Tightened chain, lubed, etc.
4) Broke the rear shock loose so it can be adjusted - it was a bit tight from the factory.
5) Cost - $136

I asked about that weird clicking noise I hear at no-load 2500 to 4000 RPM. It turned out to be a louder than normal PAIR valve - darn emissions crap!!  :duh:

Other than that, all is well. Now on to revving it up to red line!! Woo Hoo!!

Complete Givi bags and windshield going on at the end of the month. Pictures and opinions then....

Later, Phil
