But Burn
« on: April 10, 2007, 05:42:27 PM »
Hey evrybody!

At the end of May my son and I are going to ride up to Deals Gap, then to D.C. to ride in rolling thunder with my brother. ( I know, I know, Rolling Thunder is a cruiser thing but my brother is very excited we can make it).
Anyway, I'm going to be riding my 06 V-Strom 650 and it has no long trip comfort issues. My son is going to be riding the 96 B6 which as we all know, has the seat from hell after about 150-200 miles
Has anybody found a "cheep" easy fix for this? Maybe a sheep skin, gell pad or something?

Thanks,
Jim

Edit: Fixed the month thing from March to May

Maybe a sheep skin, gell pad or something?

Either one of your ideas - or an air bladder - will help. The only thing I know about any of them is what I read in a Motorcycle Consumer News shootout a few years ago where they compared sheepskin, gel pad, air pad and one of those beaded seat things. They didn't like the beads, not because they were uncomfortable, but because they said it didn't change their butt-burn seat time. They did get some letters in follow-on issues about how the readers had more positive experiences. The Airhawk air bladder got the best review, but they were also the most expensive. Gel pads and sheepskin rated pretty close to one another and not that far behind the air. They gave the sheepskin the BEST BUY award because it was cheaper than anything they tested and provided almost as good a result as the best... and was warmer to sit on in the cold than anything and didn't heat up like gel does in the hot sun. The downside was it wasn't the hot ticket in the rain.

I can 2nd what Red01 said.

The Sheepskin pretty good, but it's not perfect. I use one on my 2nd Gen B6 and it really helps cut down on the chaffing on the inside of my thighs for me.

Once I upgraded to Leather riding pants, it got even better. Somehow the leather pants with the sheepskin on my B6 makes for all day comfort.

I use the sheepskin on all long distance treks, but have to take it off in the rain. I don't put it on for rides under 2-3 hours.

Cost for me was good. I stole the sheepskin my wife had for all of our kids when they were babies. She said she was saving it for grandkids, so I expect it WILL cost me big time to replace it soon!!

I too use a sheepskin on the seat.  Really good in summer and winter.

But, as someone else pointed out, sheepskin is not so good when it's wet for a couple of reasons - your arse gets REALLY wet and wet sheepskin smell REALLY REALLY bad.  Ofcourse, this is only a problem IF you ride in the rain.

Riding in the rain is a bit hard to do at the moment Mick!
If you can't ride today, try and have a good day anyway!

Unfortunately, you're 100% right.

In fact what I find strange is that they are changing the Learner Driver rules so they have to do so many hours in the rain - too bloody bad if you're the middle of a drought... :duh:  :duh:

Although I think it rained a bit last night - well this morning the car was wet and so was the washing on the line.
