new plate holder...thoughts
« on: May 06, 2006, 04:31:09 PM »
I have been wanting to clean up the back end a bit. So I looked at other bikes (cruisers, sportbikes) to get ideas. I liked the curved plates, but did not like the chain encircling mounts. So I dreamt up my own idea and let my paint/fabrication shop take it from there.
The result is a plate tucked behind the can. Hanging over the disc at close tolerance and almost invicible from the side. I like it. What do you think????

I like the look, with the curve in the plate. It's a nice variation from the normal swingarm mounted plates. Is it close to any moving parts where as it could possibly become loose and end up in your wheel or hinder your rear rotor? I'm not sure about where you are, but how do the police handle situations like that? I hear alot of places are strict with the placing of license plates.

It is mounted to the backside of the swing arm at the two phillips head screws just forward of the axle.  As for the law...we shall see.  A lot of kids have'em tucked under the tail forward of the tire, cruisers have them everywhere.  I think your road manners are more of a threshold for being stopped.
As it will move with the swingarm, nothing should ever touch.  It is very close to the rotor and curved to match.  But I see no chance of hitting anything unless the weld brakes and it comes off.  I may rotate it a smidge counterclockwise for better visibility.

Only the first pic still works:

Not really that different than the ones around sprockets, just around the disc instead. The possible plus over having it on the sprocket side is it might reduce chain lube flinging onto the wheel.

From the pic, it seems like it might be a little too high to keep LEO's happy. If it's not lit, that could be another source of trouble... especially if you find an anal LEO following you just looking for an excuse to light you up.

We've got squids around here that mount 'em up in front of the tire... but that's just asking for trouble.

Brought it down a bit.  Looks better as well.  No requiremetn for illumination.  I will just ride in a semi-responsible manner and change it if and when directed.
