New Wave Windshield Extender
« on: May 05, 2006, 07:54:35 PM »
I noticed those two little allen key bolts holding the windshield in place.  I also noticed the taller windshield for my bandit is way more than i want to pay (when i'm not even sure if it will help much) so...... I've got an idea for a metal piece fabricated to bolt around the on the back of the present windshield and then go out and up five inches above the present one.  Paint it to match and it might look trick.  Kinda like a spoiler on the rear of a car except reverse!  Do you get it?  I can't really describe it but it might work.  And it doesn't matter if i can't see through it as i'm so tall anyway.

any thoughts?

I have read that the windshield on the bandits are very brittle and will crack if tweaked at all.

But if your idea works let me know. I'm 6'2" and get knocked around pretty good  at 70+ if I don't get down behind the windshield.

Although, what I have been doing lately (and it works pretty well) is to lay on my tank bag. It supports my chest and allows me to just peer over the top of the windshield.

Good Luck!

Have you actually taken the windscreen off and looked at the shape of it?  I think that might lead you to believe this solution would be extra ugly.

You mean something like this:
Saeng TA's Wingtip

If you're balking at the price of the secdem screen, you won't like the Saeng Wintip's $199.95(US) price though.

The wingtip looks like a clever way to solve wind blast probelms. Does anyone out there use this product on a bandit?

I try that too but it seems a 46 year old neck is not up the strain for more than five minutes!  How old are you?

I've inquired about the touring lip - thanks for the tip - if it fits on my Gen3, I will order the sucker!

I received the below message from the company that sells the "LIP":

Hello Luke,

The LIP for the Bandit attaches using 3M Dual Locks which allow you to
remove and re-attach the LIP. (One caveat is that with successive
removal/re-attachments the Dual Locks will weaken over time and will
need to be replaced) Just give us a call toll free 866.540.5679 to
ascertain we have the LIP in stock, and if not, we'll make one (if it's
early enough in the day anyways, or better yet, call the day before
coming) Unfortunately we are not open on the weekends. You'll have to
come in during business hours (M-F 8AM-5PM)

Keep in mind we have both a LIP and a Touring LIP for the Bandit.
(Touring version available for 2001-ON models only)

Safe and pleasant rides,
Leo

I'm having them double-check that cuz some guys don't realize the bikes changed!  Kinda scares me when they say 2001-ON....  Don't know if there's much difference in the windshield or even if it makes much of a difference with these stick-on touring lips.  Some bikes you are supposed to drill holes as well on the old winshield.

With a fairing, the unavoidable fact is that the wind flowing over the windscreen is accelerated and turbulent.  Unless the windscreen is VERY LARGE, or the rider "tucks" like a roadracer, the inevitable result is buffeting and higher velocity air at helmet level.  For a tall rider, this is a prescription for neck fatigue and lower back discomfort.  Granted, fairings do keep the cold off and extend the riding season but, for me, a naked bike where I can ride in a steady undisturbed airstream without the buffeting at approximately groundspeed is far more comfortable.  A slight forward lean allows my torso to "float" on the airstream and actually reduces pressure on my arms, wrists. Try a naked bike at 65-75 MPH and see for yourself.  I just don't think you will be able to get away from wind buffeting unless you "tuck in" or get a really big windscreen.

You have to consider this is a US company and the US never got a 3G Bandit, so what they're saying is true for the US market. Judging from the pics of the 3G, they're probably not goint to be able to use a product like this designed for the 2G screen.

Well I might try one of these things since I live about 5 miles from their office (no shipping charges). 89.00 is pretty low price considering the cost of other options. I just need to get down there on a weekday which is going to be tough right now (their not open on weekends).

I'll post my experience with the thing after riding for a while. There are two versions avaliable for the Bandit: a regular lip and a touring lip. I'll probably get the touring lip.

I don't like the 'lip'. I don't like the looks of it and I am sure it will creat turbulence as a result of that swoop. TA's model shows how to prevent just that but I find TA's a little costly a little too bulky and there is no mention of removal. Still holding out for something else.
