Hi,

I'm planning a trip from Montreal to Mexiico city in late September and am wondering if anyone has ideas about routes through the US and Mexico, what insurance I need for Mexico, How not to get held up by bandits, just ride one...etc. I made a trip from Vancouver to Oaxaca 20 years ago on my Honda 400 hawk, and I just remember two things in particular about the ride. Getting super dehydrated in Nevada, and my ass hurting. Well, I'm older now, so I expect my ass to hurt more, but maybe there's some solutions... Anyone use lambs wool? Does that work?

I haven't been in Mexico for about as long as you and when I went it was in a cage. From what I remember, you'll need insurance for Mexico. Most US companies don't include Mex, but do include Canada. Not sure how yours works up there, but check with your carrier. If they don't cover Mexico, or offer an add-on policy, then you'll need to get separate insurance. There are places at border towns that sell Mex insurance, but finding bike ins may be more difficult (not sure tho). Try doing some searches for it before you go and see if you can line up the best buy ahead of time.

As for bandits, avoid stopping in unpopulated areas - especially camping on the roadside. Don't have things of value in plain sight. When parking in towns, if a kid runs up and offers to watch your vehicle for a few pesos, pay him to do it. If nothing else, it will keep him from vandalizing you.

I am going to postpone the trip for another time.. Too much money to bring the bike back to Montreal in the middle of winter on a truck. Also the time on the road, and the possibility of riding during storm season.

There's a member on Sporttouring.net who goes by the name Saigon5. He's also from Montreal and takes a lot of long bike trips. Check the board out and shoot him an e-mail. he may be able to give you some good tips, and if not, may be good company, as he's also from Montreal.

I'm taking a trip up your way in about a week. Any good spots to check out in the city? I plan on staying for a day.

Every Friday and Saturday night in the summer there's a bike cruising scene at the corner of St. Laurent and Ste.Catherine streets. Can't say that I see too many Bandits, though. It starts with the cruisers and Harleys, then Gold Wings, then racer type bikes. There's an ice cream joint that everyone hangs around. Something to check out, even if you don't want to hang out. There's a Cirque de Soleil going on. Reserve your tickets in advance... Go up the "mountain" Mont Royal and check out the view from the lookout. Check out Boulevard St Laurent.. The traffic is more intense there at midnight than at rush hour with everyone looking at each other.

I'm a n00b right now...but I am already planning some long distance trips for the future...to me, thats what riding is all about!

Try to hit up some scenic roads along the way like the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Natchez Trace. It will be a nice change of pace from the interstate highways.
