2 questions :

My 2k b12 "surges" at idle, between 1100-1300 rpm.  Carb issue?  What should I look for?
Also, does the rear/side bodywork need to be removed to remove the fuel tank?
It seems as if the tank edge is under the lip of the bodywork.  Any help is appreciated.

Some ideas:

- Clean the carbs (Techron)
- Check valve clearance and balance carbs
- vacuum leaks (carb boots)

The two side covers need to be removed as they plug into tabs on the rear of the fuel tank.

I had a surging like that which would come and go.  I changed the regulator/rectifier and it hasn't come back... yet.  Possibly if the voltage output of the regulator is too low at idle it could bog down the system.  Measure the voltage across your battery.  If it is lower with the engine at idle than it is with the engine off then there's a problem there.  Just one of many possibilities.

You don't have to completely remove the side/tail plastic, just enough fasteners to be able to spread it apart to get the tank off.

There is only one fastener on each side cover, then 2 studs that pop out.  Very easy to remove.  You don't need to do anything on the rear plastics that go around the seat.
