Blew paint off cylinder head. Beware pressure washers
« on: September 11, 2008, 01:05:07 AM »
I've used pay spray washes before and they can help. My son got one, so this spring I did the usual cleanup. Disaster and ten thousand curses. :stooges: This one had higher pressure and blew some of the paint off my 98 Bandit's cylinder heads, (black enamel). Now it looks butt ugly. :duh:

I'm not crazy about pulling the head off for the full aluminum acid bath(s) and paint prep treatment. I can't even figure out how to protect the machined mateing surface, anyway.

Has anyone had this problem and knows of any sort of cure?

You shouldn't need to re-alodine/anodize the head as this process etches the aluminum and should be permanent as long as you haven't removed metal.  You should be able to just repaint it.  For the 1200, you can use Testors #1813 Black Pearl Metalic.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I have a 98 and it looks like sorta shiny black enamel but I cannot see any pearlescence to it... but what do I know. I had the fairing repainted, (cheap), and they colour matched it to Maroon... with the same suffixes as I recall.
Do you have any idea where you can get this stuff? Car paint guys? We have different stores up here than the States. Canadian Tire are huge in this stuff buy have their own line and have never heard of Testors.

By the by, do you spray it on with a paint sprayer or is it in an ereosol can?

Testors makes hobby/model stuff. You can find their paint in most hobby shops. They make it in spray cans and in jars for spraying or brushes.

Wal-Mart used to be a good place to find it, too... but my son was in there the other day trying to get some and they no longer carried it. A clerk told him they quit because people were buying it to get high.  I hadn't heard people were resorting to aerosol paint... I knew they've been huffing model glue for decades.  I guess I'm just not up with the times.
