Hi,

I've got my '92 400v bandit for six months now and have noticed that my chain keeps on slackening. This only started happening in the last two months. I've probably had to retighten it thrice ,as shown in the manual, in these last two months.

Can anyone offer any advice as to what i should do to resolve this problem.

Do you know how old the chain is? Was the chain properly oiled/maintained by the previous owner? Are there any tight spots? What do the sprokets look like?

If the answers these are: I don't know, no, yes and rounded/hooked. I'd be replacing the chain and sprokets.

It's possible that you are setting the chain too tight. My experience has been that if you follow the instructions in MOM you will overtighten, stretch, and overtighten until you ruin the chain and sprockets.

Use the "search" function at the top of of the page and you will find threads on the topic in this site that will give you various points of view on the matter.

If you aren't overtightening it, it's time for a new one. Best to change the sprockets, too.

The B4 isn't too hard on sprockets. I changed my chain over the winter ~ 15Kmiles (I assume it was the original). The sprockets were perfect or near perfect. You may want to take a look at them before getting new ones (unless you are changing gearing).

Thanks for the info guys.

Been sick so i've only checked my bike yesterday. My chain looks like there might be some slight kinks in it. I'm not exactly sure what the tight spots are supposed to look like. The sprockets look ok but i'm gonna replace the chain and sprockets seeing that i'm the first owner of the bike in this country and there was no maintenance record available.

The kinks are the 'tight spots'.
These are links that don't quite straighten out as they come off the sprockets, and are easy to spot.
Usually it's dirt and or rust that causes links to kink.
I'd clean the chain well, and attempt to adjust it a couple of times before springing for a new chain.
