Help bike putting white smoke and oil from tail pipe
« on: May 07, 2009, 07:35:26 PM »
Hi everyone, I was wondering if maybe anyone can give me some advice and maybe shed a little light on a problem i seem to be having with my 02 bandit 1200 engine. Its kind of a long story but here it goes.

Ive installed a 02 bandit 1200 motor into a 2000 suzuki katana 600 bike problem is im wondering if its possible because i got the engine off ebay and it was ship to me sitting partially on its side for 3 days until it got to me is there a possibillity that oil has gotten into areas where it shouldnt be. when i start it up i have to use the choke because the carbs i was told need synchronizing. When its running it wont stay running unless the choke is on ( not much choke needed) and after letting it run for about 3 minutes smoke starts coming from the tail pipe and the longer i let it run look like the smoke gets thicker. I have notice a lil pubble of oil come from the mid pipe where it connects to the tail pipe. When i first got the engine installed i never drained the oil i thought there was none in it and shippers werent allowed to ship parts that contain oil or gas still filled that way.  :banghead:NEEDLESS TO SAY LIKE A DUMMY I NEVER SECOND GUESSED IT added 3 and a half quarts of oil in the engine and the sit gauage was showing over full but at this point i had already started the bike up and had it running while on choke for at least 8 minutes. IS IT POSSIBLE THAT I MAY HAVE OVERFILLED IT CUZ THATS WHEN I SEEN THE MOST OIL COMING FROM THE TAIL PIPE ALTHOUGH SINCE THEN I HAVE PUT THE REQUIRED AMOUNT IT CALLS FOR? Or is it maybe because of the position it was shipped to me in and the time it took getting to me? Should i have the piston rings checked? Because i was told that if the bike sat to long its possible that maybe the piston ring seals have gone bad on it and at this point i have no idea how long it sat .

ANY ADVICE AT THIS POINT WOULD BE APPERCIATED BECAUSE THE WARM WEATHER IS PASSING ME BY AND I WANNA RIDE PLZ HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

Pull the spark plugs, and post a pic of them, seems very likely you have gotten oil where it shouldnt be. May also have a carb issue, did you clean them before installing them??

Im new to this site so i dont knolw how to post pics but ill try and figure it out. Once again thanks..

On the form's front page, near the top there's a section entitled, "Site FAQ and Rules."  In there, there's a topic on how to post pics.
Here's the link:  http://forums.banditalley.net/index.php?topic=520.0

Suck/drain out the overfilled oil!!! Too much oil is not a good thing either.  (A little better than no oil though.)  :bandit:
You should be between the MIN & MAX lines on the sight glass when the bike has both tires on flat, level ground, the bike should also be level side-to-side.

Did you happen to get the 1200's oil cooler?  I'm not too sure the Kat 600's cooler will handle the bigger motor... especially if it gets real hot where you live.

hey thanks for the advice. I still have the katana 600 oil cooler hook to the engine  but the bandit oilc ooler will be in by tomorrow hopefully. I will drain all the oil out as you suggested and put new oil in once i put on the new b12 oil cooler i hope that is the problem. Im curious though wether or not its possible for a bike to be running strong on all 4 cylinders and still need valve seals replaced. And also why does it take at least 2 to 3 minutes to start smoking ive noticed since starting it it has stop leaking oil after letting it run for 3 to 4 minutes but its still smoking is it maybe just burning off excess oil that was in the exahaust pipe.

If you are/were overserviced, the windage from the crank and other moving parts slinging  in oil that normally don't could be the cause of the smoking.  Generally speaking, when a 4-stroke engine burns the most oil on acceleration you have a ring problem, if it is worst on decelleration, it's a valve guide/stem seal issue.  If this B12 motor sat for a while without running, you could have stuck rings and/or rotten valve stem seals.

Hey all thanks for the prompt response to my questions i had, but now im wondering if you guys can help me one more time i took my bike to a shop and it took the guy no less that a day to fix what i thought was probably a  seal or gasket problem and i cant see no one doing that type of job in a day being as though how much work goes into changing those things so my question is what is it he possibly could have done to make it stop smoking so quickly becuz he refuse to tell me but he charged me 400.00 and i must admit the bike runs pretty good all though he suggest jetting the carbs out because i have a scorpion pipe on it. If any of you have an idea it would be much apperciated. Thax in advance

If you just have a Scorpion Slip On can on your bike you don't NEED to jet it......if it's a COMPLETE pipe you do.
