hello boys
my 2 hundreth oil change(on various bikes) went quite wrong today.filled the oil after oil and filter change. started the engine, no drips. drive off and a mile or 2 later rear wheel is slippery and engines smoking alot. dupmed all my oil. long story short the RUBBER GASKET FROM THE OLD FILTER STAYED IN PLACE. as putting the new filter on is sort of a shot in the dark i didnt notice so i had 2 gaskets on. did a repeat oil and filter chance and all looked good. mile or 2 later getting a far amount of smoke have some drops off oil dripping off the filter. baby it home dont want a repeat of the previous oil gusher.
so did i strip the threads??? is that fixable???? any ideas???? thanks
peace,wayne

Wayne,

Last year I had a similar experience. I had done the oil/filter change along with a few other things and had started my B12 to warm a bit so I could check the oil level. I had my back to the bike as it idled at the entrance to the garage and thought "damn it sure sounds funny". I turned around and my bike was like a lawn sprinkler, spraying Amsoils finest all over the place. Talk about a tough clean up! That stuff was really hard to get up off of the concrete, and the bike.

Anyways, since I like to spin the filter on tighter than is really recommended (I don't want it coming off until I say so) the old o-ring had seperated from the old filter and stuck to the crankcase, so just like you I now had two gaskets and one hell of a leak. My guess is that you have some c-rap stuck to the sealing surface that is causing your leak. If the new filter spins on smooth the thread should be OK. Besides, the threads are inside of the seal made by the gasket right?

You might start by removing the filter again and taking a light and carefully inspecting the sealing surface to make sure ther is nothing there that should not be there, oil the gasket on your new filter, spin it on and you should be fine.

Good Luck!

Steve
