I wonder if it would help to put ant-seize on those dowels before reinstalling the cover? Might make it easier to take off the next time.
Sounds like the key word is patience.... I need to tackle mine this winter too.

if you can't fine nylon wedges, wrap some wood ones with duct tape and go for it! the thin i think? hard wood cabnit wedges out work great! if you go at it slow and even you should get er off in no time!
