Thats a bit harsh Pete, 20 years ago, me look like scum.
With my fine head of hair, yeh ok it was half way down my back.
With that fine growth of hair on my face. yeh ok it was half way down to my belly. but it was always well kept. No tomorrows breakfast kept in my growth.  I rode a loud, ok very loud hardly dangerous .  How could I possibly mistaken for scum?. jeez

Ya know I think you might be on to something - A friend of mine, who up until last week, had only seen me in my 'work gear' (dress shoes, trousers, business shirt and tie) was quite taken back when she saw me picking up one of the kids from soccer training - on the bike - dressed in bike boots, jeans, leather jacket, leather vest, black helmet (complete with tinted visor).  

Her first comment was "Christ.....you scared the hell out of me"
Her second comment was "I didn't know you were a bikie"

These were both said as she slowly stepped away.

After a little education she now realises that not everyone who rides a bike wants to rape, pillage and plunder - we only do that every second weekend

While out couriering today, with Bandit the dog on the tank, a nice looking lady, said almost the same thing. Something like, "you looked mean, tough, and nasty, till I seen your little mate on the tank, now you look like a big softy" Now I am confused.

I gotta throw my $.o2 in....I think ya'll got it right at the beginning; cops are people.  The trend over the past few years if for people to tailgate more, hence cops do too.  They probably do it on their off time just like everyone else.  I understand what ya'll are talking about, but occassionally try to read some of these new designer tags....if the cop is over 30 he likely needs to pull up way too close to be able to read the dang things!  No excuse for the others, though.

A family friend up in Michigan got pulled over after a cop tailgated him with his bright lights on until he sped up.

Being an ornary cuss, he fought the ticket and ended up going to court. Funny thing is, the cop was still doing the same old trick late at night... guess who he pulled over next?

Thats right! The -JUDGE-!  

Case dismissed, cop disciplined.  

Honestly though, my experiances with cops have mostly been good. I've been pulled over five times in 10 years and really have no complaints. My family has a history of law enforcement and fire fighting, though, so I try to be as respectful as possible whenever I encounter one or the other.

I grew up in a small beach town that was pretty dead at night during the winter, had one main access road.....and after midnight, maybe one car an hour passing through.  They also had one cop on duty, who was pretty bored.   This was an island, and only one way in/out.  The cop would sit by the bridge and wait for a car to cross onto the island, and tailgate you all the way home....EVEN THOUGH the population was low enough during the winter you KNEW everybody, and even I could recognize everybodys car.......
  Later, when I was older, my brothers and I had paper routes we did int he morning from a car.  He'd tailgate us.....
  Eventually, a couple of people complained to the chief, but nothing was done.   This jerk would be a foot or two off your arse for a couple of miles.  

  After he ran into the SECOND citizen who'd had enough, and stood on his brakes.....the cop vanished........to be replaced by another winner who would shoot at drunk teenagers who would try to outrun him on foot!

Law Enforcement, thankfully, has come a long way in 40 years.....

Gotta agree with that.
Thankfully I must admit most cops I've meet are human, its like the old motorcyclist saying, "when we do right no one remembers but when do wrong no one forgets". Funny how a couple of bad apples stuffs the whole barrel. In fact I've meet a few cops that could not have gone out off their way more, to help us out   . But maybe it was their way of getting us outta town that little bit quicker

Damn Cops!

Unfortunately, some of us are just dicks.  The percentage of dicks in uniform is probably about the same as dick out of uniform.  The big difference is that the uniformed dick is harder to forget.

Most of us drive like A-holes.  We learn quickly that the only way to get anywhere in a short enough time to keep our poor beloved citizens and revered bosses from bitching at us for taking too long is to drive agressively.  Of course they also spank the snot out of us when we screw up and crash.  Once we get the habit of driving hard it never goes away.  Heavy right foot or over active right wrist anyone?

Some of us need to get close to read a license plate.  Most of us have also learned that getting close is a good way of giving some doper mope out looking to steal some honest citizen's stuff a case of the fever which causes him to do something stupid enough to justify stopping him so that at least he's not stealing for the next hour because he's still twitchy over the cops jamming him up.  Some of us just jam up normal people because we are dicks.

All of us "profile".  Some of us are better at it than others and get it right more often than not.  Those of us with brains keep it on the polite side until we know for sure that we have caught us a real mope so that we can dust off and send on their way with minimal fuss, any good citizens who we mistakenly misread.  Those of us who get it more wrong than right are dicks.

Many of us are just regular folks who have been taught by our fellow man to hate our fellow man because we get the pleasure of cleaning up his crap on a regular basis. Some of us are just dicks.

Most of us could give a rats a$$ about revenue because we don't see any of it.  The county takes its cut, the court takes its cut and my city might just get a few bucks per ticket that go towards paving the street.  No one gives me a toaster if I write a whole bunch of tickets. In fact, chances are your court appearance screwed up my day off.  Those of us who do care about revenue generation fall firmly in to the dicks looking to become administrators category.

Most of us really do believe that it ain't personal, its just business.  Those of us who don't are dicks.

Most of us will happily sit down over a beer with anyone who isn't a dick and bitch about how screwed up the government is.  Those of us who won't are dicks.

Now I'm going to quit my bitching, sign off, leave my brass pass and gat on the dresser, speed down the nearest boulevard and hope I don't get pulled over by some dick.

I've had a Ranger in a old raggedy looking SUV pull over to the right as if he was moving over to let us pass.  Both my riding buddy and myself pass him.  It was on double yellow line, but he was going slow and pulling over so we obliged.  He ticketed us both.
