Want to see a valvetrain at 14,200 rpm?
« on: February 21, 2010, 09:09:02 PM »
Cutaway of a Bimmer S1000RR at full song. I imagine a 20 year old B4 at 14,500 would look pretty close to this.

(Confession: The whole time this video was playing, I was secretly hoping the thing would come apart)

:yikes:  nice find!  Never really thought about how fast the guts really move, I guess.  Now that I've seen that, I'm proud of my little B4 for its longevity.  19 years of THAT and still running like a top. :thumb:  (most of the time, anyway).

I've thought it a few times, so that's awesome to actually see. It's just silly how it manages to move that fast and still do it's job of opening and closing the valves properly, mad!

Good find though!

Amazing video.  I called my son downstairs to watch, so he'd have an appreciation for what was going on as well.  Even though you know in theory they have to be going that fast, (especially if you've ever used a timing light, or watched a diag computer) it doesn't really strike you until you see it.

There's also a link to another video possibly of the same engine, from the bottom of the head, showing the 4 valves per cylinder working.  It didn't look as impressive to my son, until I explained that the piston had to come to TDC twice for every one time the intake valves opened up.
