I always thought that it was the V-twins were the ones that benefitted from dual exhausts.

Actually, both benefit. V-twins - or any large bore twin - commonly use two cans because of the volume of exhaust neccessitates two cans to quiet them down enough to pass sound level requirements imposed by lawmakers.
