I'm buying a brand new '06 Hayabusa, maybe. It seems that some of the guys on the Hayabusa Owners Group board are having problems with some of their '06s dropping 2nd gear. Suzuki is not covering this under warranty! If the tranny isn't covered what is? If this does happen you're talking about a $2000 repair bill. Maybe I don't want a new 'Busa. What is anyone's thoughts on this?

Sounds a little like the B12 oil consumption problem of 2001... At first, Suzuki figured it was a few cases of abuse, but after a while, they figured out there really was a problem. Early cases of "oil burners" were acused of neglect and warranty was refused. Once it was figured out, most were re-imbursed for their repairs.

If there's truely a problem, and not cases of abuse, it may take Suzuki a while to wake up to the fact. If you're worried, maybe you should look for a good, clean, used Happy-Bus.

I'd be careful about relying on "warranty refusal" posts on the internet for any solid info, as such. Isolated individuals being denied warranty for similar problems with a particular model
is not unusual. The dealers have a pretty good idea who the squids are amongst their customers.
Now if you had, say, 10 or 15 guys approach the SAME dealer with the SAME problem.....well, that's a different kettle of fish entirely.
As Red01 says, it may take awhile for Suzuki to get up to speed, assuming there even IS a problem with the tranny.
Keep us posted on this item. It'll be instructive to see EXACTLY what IS going on with this.

Darn just when I'm thinking about selling the B12 this spring for a possible new Busa purchase, a cloud pops up over an otherwise highly acclaimed bike. But I would rather hear it here then kick myself later. My only advice from personal experience is if it happens and they refuse warranty service, write the cooperate offices and CEO and let them know before the pending lawsuit you are going public on every mass media format available and use a mock up format of your campaign in the letter. It worked wonder for me with Bombardier when they refuse repairs on my brand new 96 Seadoo Speedster. Not only did they repair the defect but gave me a free 5 year warranty. Knowing your in the right, you have to bring all your guns to bear calmly and professionally in these situations otherwise they balk.

Suzuki, Honda, Yamaha, and Kawasaki, all have the same problem with 2nd gear. When you take the bike to red line in 1st gear and then try to shift easily into 2nd gear, the dogs do not engauge and you end up with the dogs rounded off. Two or three missed shifts, and you are ready for 2nd gear replacement.
In dragracing I use an electric shifter, must people use a air shifter, it shifts really hard, but you don't lose 2nd gear. When foot shifting, and really winding it out, if you shift as hard as you can you will not lose 2nd gear.

I have replaced 2nd gear on ZX12s, 9s, and Busas, also on my RF 900 and my FJ 1200. It is a pertty common problem

Wow. I only have trouble at low RPM coming off my house and I always think its because I am using the limp weenie approach. But when I arch my back crank it hard toward the opening of my neighborhood into the parkway I rev-up my engine in 1st gear to about 7k, and then it shifts unto 2nd just as fine as old wine.

+1 on the forceful shift thing.
Do NOT, ever, use a limp ankle on the shifter under any circumstances. Whack that sucker!!! Believe me, you won't break the shifter shaft or the drum selector or the drum.....
Just make sure you absolutely have a feel for the clutch
engagement/disengagement point.....

My opinion of Suzuki's 12 month limited warranty:

If you find that there is a defect in your motorcycle due to poor workmanship that causes it to not be right or to fail, we will do our best to diagnose it to the effect that we do not find anything wrong and then deny that we did anything wrong and then refuse to fix it.

Sadly, it's too true... and IMHO, it's not just Suzuki, but all the makers of motor vehicles.

OTOH, you can't blame them for be a little reluctant - at least on the first few complaints of something that turns out to be a real manufacturing defect. There's an awful lot of idiots out there that abuse and/or neglect their stuff.

I've known people in the past that would be running fast in top gear, pull in the clutch and start shifting down to first while still moving fast. That will tear up a transmission in no time - even though the clutch is pulled in the whole time. Just one way for abuse to occur.

By the way, I owned a 2002 busa and it did have a notchy stiff shifting tranny. It was easy to miss gears. I did not abuse it, but only put 1500 miles on it before selling, so it might have loosened up some with more break-in. The tranny was not reason for selling though, I was having some back trouble then plus some carpel tunnel problems with my wrists. Suzuki really does need to put the busa motor into a more upright sport touring bike with wind protection. Hey, sink that motor in the bandit!! The B-King sounds interesting but I'm not sure it will travel well.

Yep 2nd gear which I have never had a problem with! and the false 5th to 6th is a quirk with em! But shift like you meant it and give it a few K's on the odometer! its all good like a Zuki should be! If you use Dino like I do you can tell when its time to change it. She will get a bit clunky. I never used synthetic but I hear it will make the shifting smooth as silk, for longer. I will never forget my Bandit B12 but this sweetheart I grow fonder of every time I ride her!! I can't find A THING I would change on this bike. You all know the tank hinges up for easy tuning, adjustment etc ?? This is a stolen pic! I used the Po'mans Syncer fish tank hose i made for my Bandit, it worked even better on my Busa! and no hookin up another fuel supply.

Sorry to say I agree. Being the owner of a 2001 1200s and inquiring at my dealer about an oil consumption test. Was told THEY would have to ride the bike for 1500 miles for the test to be valid.

Needless to say I did not perform the test. I would say don't buy a Suzuki if you are worried about any type of warranty work.
