Looking At A Gixxer!!
« on: September 28, 2006, 07:52:51 PM »
Hate to admit it, but for some reason I have an itch to get a sportbike!  Not sure if this itch is going to be scratched or not.

I love the Bandit and it does pretty much everything well but I guess I just want to try something different.  Did think about adding clip-ons to the Bandit but not sure.....

Anybody had any riding on a Gixxer? - I'm thinking more of a 600 than a 750.

Particularily like the black with a bit of yellow:

take care.

Jim - it depends on what you're after.  If you're expecting to do a lot long touring days or doing a decently long commute every day, I think you'll get tired of the sportbike riding position (although it's not as torturous as many make it out to be).  If it's going to be a weekend plaything for a couple hours of tearing up the backroads, you'll love it!

BTW - the 750 is torqueier and actually can make a better streetbike than the peaky 600.

My roommate has a GSX-R 1000, although nice and trigger happy, it is not all that comfy.  If you are just looking for something to wizz around on and not have far to go, then they are fun.  If you use it as a main mode of transportation.....that is another story just like Pitter says.

Don't get me wrong its fun...if its speed you want, I can tell you that my roommate and I race from time to time, and my 99 1200 bandit definitley holds its own.  Its just as fast.

Hey Jim. Probably a lot like you but older. What I'm getting at is I had a streeted Gixxer a few years back but found I had to give it up due to bad knees and bad sholder and neck. Just can't tuck in the way I used to. The Bandit allows me to still enjoy the Ricerocket ride with minimal pain. But, I have to admit, that pic you posted sure looks good. The Gixxer, Imho, has always been one of the best looking street/race bikes around. Never going too far to the 'Starwars' styling we see in some.

I have ridden an 03' model and did not like the position at all.  Sure its fast but so is my 1200 and its a lot more comfortable.

Dang how much do they pay teachers in Canada?

I haven ridden 600,750, and 1000 from early 90's models up. Dont like superbike riding postion. I cant stand all my weight ( 250#) on my wrists.
I also think the bars are too low. I know I can raise them with a new triple  clamp but the pegs are still awful high.
They are great bikes, but MAYBE more suited to a track? Can you really ride harder and faster on a GSXR on the street than say a Aprilla naked bike, Ducati Moster, Bandit, Z1000, CB919? I would rather ride one of these if I was seaching for some more power.
20 miles is all I can handle on the GSXR.

The prices are really not that bad for canada as I've seen brand new 2006 Gixxer 750s for a bit less than $10000 here.  Can't locate any brand new 600s yet to see if they are a better deal.

The way I look at it is I'm getting old and rickety so I might not have too many more chances at owning a sportbike.  Maybe I should just try clip-ons on the bandit and see what that feels like?

Hey, you only live once, right?  I just want that 'once' to go on for a bit, that's all!

Jim, do some review reading online.  The 750 is the way to go, hands down!  It's just within a hair of being the same performance as the 1000.  Do it, man!  Then post your review here.  I can't wait to read it!

Hey, Des, how's it going?

I HAVE done a lot of research and everybody seems to agree with Pitter B4, in that the 750 has the torque so you don't have to rev the thing above 8500 all the time.  But then some writers/riders say that the Suzuki gearbox is SOOOOO lovely that it is a lot of fun rowing back and forth on the 600.

The price difference is so small, apparently, that it isn't even worth mentioning....

Wonder how that sucker (the 750) would feel after a Bandit 650....the weight is about the same and maybe forty or fifty more horses!!!  That would be some serious giddyup!!

Just read a recent comparison test, however, and they liked the ZX-6R the best with the Gixxer a distant third (Yammie second):

Is that one beautiful piece of work or what?

Where's Michelangelo when you need him??

Aesthetically, IMHO of course, the R6 is the best of those 3.  If I were looking at a 600 class superbike, I’d look Triumph first.

Come on now,I've not ridden since my day at Nelson Ledges and those pics are givin' me a woody!
There was a older gentlman there in my class with a new Triumph 675. My! what a beatutiful bike,he said his kids bought it for him and sent it from Cal.(must have put them through med school I'm guessing?) I passed him though with the mughty Bandit.
I think any of the new sport bikes are great, and the one that you can make go fast, is the one you get used to. I still have the hots for a SV1000. Less wieght, and you don't have to work as hard to stay in power range as the smaller inline 4s. But I'm flexable,I'll be patient and see if a deal comes up on somthing. (AND KEEP THE BANDIT)

Just for comparison's sake, the yammie in question:

It's the 50th anniversary special for 2006.  Funny, I was never much for Yamahas but that has me drooling....

I can't find a pic quickly but if you go R6 - you have to go Raven black!

US MSRP for the Triumph 675 is $9k
