Squid Sighting..... new species

Add me to the list of those who used to not wear a helmet... at certain times.  Riding out in West Texas for miles and seeing only one or two vehicles took a lot of the motivation to wear one away.  Once I got into a city the lid went on - but that was 20 years ago.  Much has changed and there is no way I'll get on a bike without a helmet now.

13 stiches to my noggin from riding my dirt bike helmetless on the powerline road (more like a 2-track trail) behind my old house changed my mind. . . I was just gonna ride up and down the road a couple times to cool off on a hot summer day. Before that, it was ALWAYS on a street bike (stress checking the chin bar of a full face in a low speed, low-side, street get-off decades ago convinced me that was a good decision). Now it's ALWAYS on ANY bike.

I started riding bikes at a early age. And the first rule is you had to wear a helmet.boots.long pants, gloves. It seems to have stuck with me, because I feel naked riding without them.( speaking of naked,I once was talked into streaking a big politian party on a motox bike . I was about 17 during the streaker days, came out of a  dry pond that was just dug, about way too far in the air, bottomed out on landing but stayed on 2 wheels to make a quick trip and do the jump again. But I was wearing a helmet and motox boots.) Beides, you do'nt have to crash to make a helmet protect you. I do'nt like bugs in my face. And I drive too fast anyway.I have a couple of helmets, and 1 will be with me on every trip.

My first bike was a 73 Honda CB450. I rebuilt the engine on it and it was pretty torquey. I think the fastest I got it was 90 going downhill, but it could accelerate pretty quick. Never did have a helmet to ride it though. Had a pair of goggles...

I always ride with boots, jeans, leather jacket, and a helmet now. Sometimes the leather gets hot and sometimes (rarely), I miss the wind in my hair, but I'd much rather have a noggin intact. Plus, as smooth said, I go too fast. 70+ mph on the 1200 is easy speed to get to...

I've been thinking of getting one of thse synthetic jackets that breath and don't flap around so much. (sorry, off topic)

I really don't find the helmet inconvenient when riding. Sometimes it's a pain to lug around when I'm off the bike but it sure is nice when that big ass bug goes splat on my face shield at highway speed. I just don't see any good reason not to wear one, and the "cool" factor doesn't even come close.
