I lived in Ventura for 25 years, and rode all the roads Ventura, Ojai and Santa Barbara. Very simular roads, but I couldn't tell where you were

If you were to take the 126 east to Magic Mountain you would have been in my back yard! This is what we like to call the short loop it's a good way to kill an hour and it's just down the road from the house in Angles National Forrest!

I gotta get me a video cam, preferably one of the newer hard drive models.

I don't think you want a harddrive model.  Harddrives don't like vibration and impact, especially when running.

Stormi is very correct I made the mistake of buying a hard drive camera and quickly found out they don't like the harmonics of the bike!

I picked up a mini DV for $300 and it works great! The next purchase will be a CCD camera to mount on the helmet or to do some shots from various locations on the bike!

Thank you, Stormi and Mongo, for raising my "video cam consciousness".
You guys have taught me more in 4 or 5 sentences than I could have learned from some nitwit salesman in a month.
Now I just have to go looking and find something on sale. After all, why pay big bucks for something that MAY end up sliding down the road.....right??!!??

Bingo!!  Just try to get one with a input jack ( the name of it escapes me right now ( really bad day...) but I'm sure Mongo knows what I'm talking about) so that down the road you can attach a bullet cam if you choose to.

I think your talking about the AV (audio/video) plug most cameras will come with them but not all will receive a signal! My JVC also comes with a USB connection (the camera has a memory card slot for still photos, great option no need to carry two cameras) and a DV connection that sends a digital video signal to the computer.

I picked up a card for my computer with software for under $150 that has a set up for fire wire to the DV. An input for analog signal for the AV connection also works for the old VHS and an S-Video slot.

That's the one.  Some of them don't receive by default, because they're set to output.  On my Canon, it's a toggle.  Setting one, it inputs from a bulletcam or VCR, setting 2, it outputs to the TV.  Worth looking into.   If the camera can record from a VCR or other source, you should be able to use a bulletcam with it.

Here's a link with a bit of information:
http://www.bulletcam.com/requirements.htm
and a good list of some compatible cameras.  I doubt it's exhaustive, but it should give you a good indication of brands that play nice:

You should be able to get a firewire card for under $50 (cdn) and a lot of the software tools that I use, are free.  If you want more info, let me know, I'll dig up the info. (It's been a while, so I'd have to look for the stuff that I use.)  Also,.. some cameras, like my Canon, come with enough software that you don't need to buy any.

I use to work in the oil field around Magic Mountian, but I never road my bike over there. All of the So. Calif mountian roads are great riding, if you don't hit a rock in the road. :duh:

Ever see this set up?

https://www.rflimited.com/Site.asp?CID=3

I hadn't, no...

It's not a bad idea for someone who hasn't got any of the set up.  My thing would be that flash media can be a real PITA, because it tends to corrupt.  It would really suck to have that happen after recording a once in a lifetime ride...
