It'll have come in WAY under $2000 and have a waterproof monitor with GPS before it's on my shopping list though.

Yea, like around 80%-90% off of that number to make unto mine.  I can really see cagers needing this even more than bikes.

Somebody's making something that'd work, but they want to charge an insane amount for it still.  (They're not saying how much, but will lease them at $500 (USD?)/wk!)  For the quantities this would sell in, it could be priced at $400 USD. 

Once this gets on a TV show showing its utility *someone's* gonna sell a million of them.

Then we're going to get lots of HUDs in cars and then we'll get it in helmet visors!

Well, there's not a whole lot of protection for the idea, since it's using existing technology in a new way.  So if there's enough demand, someone will come in with a less expensive set-up.  On the other hand, the cost of a infrared unit and a GPS set are already several hundred $, and they don't excatly give away radio/intercom sets, so I don't think it will be dirt cheap.

I'm thinking it can be cheap.  Take a current $200 digital camera, make it waterproof and swap the CCD.  Doesn't need to have a *huge* screen or be high res to be useful.
