salt flats,record on a 100cc

 A guy I know and used to race against when I road a 125 befor moving up to 250 class, will be going to Utah to set a new record on a 100 cc motorcycle. He's using a Kaw engine in his effort. He's as you would guess,small in stature,like a jockey. Steve Loyd "Smoker" is his name,60 something, and his favorite movie is as you would guess, "The Fastest Indian"  Gooooo Smoker!
  I recently read a article that has me intreged," Race to the clouds" A race (time) up Pikes Peak. If I get a hold of my Dad's old Rickman/Triumph,That would be something I would be intrested in. I'm sure my wife might have something to say about that though. Missing some of those turns could give you time to think about you mistake befor you land.  Dan

If he's using that KX100 2-stroke engine that thing has allot of power once it gets past 8000 RPM's, about 27 HP

  I beleive it is,he said he knows he can get over 100 mph out of it. And I think thats all the record is now on a 100cc. You have quite a bit of run to get to speed,so gearing and a small fairing is all he needs.

With the right gearing and being a small guy he will defiantly hit 100, kids do it all the time for short periods. That is this engines only achillies heel is that if not tuned and mixed just right it has been known to seize past 9000 RPMs if wrung out to long. Happed to me once while wrung neck too much in hot weather seized and locked up the rear wheel and almost lost control until I yanked the clutch in. I'm sure your friend has all that figured out already, how cool.

  He's pretty knowledgeable, and experienced. I'm sure he's run into it befor. I know I have, racing a Bultaco Astro growing up. I've had to pull the clutch more than once myself.

He will be sure to use a two stroke with an extreme expansion chamber exhaust... maybe a 1000 rpm power band -or probably less. I seem to recall that someone put out a two cylinder 100cc two stroke for a brief time.

I also remember an article on a German Kreidel 50cc race bike wayy back... 24 gears if my memory serves. The power band was so narrow, it probably needed 'em all. It was a tiny little thing and lightly built.

The coment that went with the picture was, "Do you get on it, or do you put it on.

So, what is the current LSR for a 100cc bike?  Here's some pretty fast old tiddlers:

Engine type: Water-cooled 50 cc parallel twin 2-stroke. Maximum 17,500 rpm, 170 kph.
Transmission: 14 speeds

Engine type: Water-cooled 125 cc square-four 2-stroke.
Bore x Stroke: 35.5 x 31.5 mm
Compression ratio: 8.4
Carburetor: VM24
42 hp / 16,500 rpm (350 bhp per liter), 145 mph.
Transmission: 12 speeds

Here's a 50cc Kreidler that gets to 118.9 kph in 7.3 seconds:



And according to http://fullspeed.to/50cc-racing - the LSR for a 50cc bike in 1965 was 210 kph - on a Kreidler...  :grin:

I'd kill for something like that. So sweet looking. That's one mean machine. 12 speed tranny. Wicked.

With a 12-speed gearbox, the powerband is probably about as wide as the tires.  :lol:
