Squid Sighting..... new species
« on: May 14, 2005, 10:54:44 PM »
I am familiar with the usual genus of squid...... t-shirt, shorts, tennis shoes, yada yada.  Today I saw how evolution works as I was passed by two such creatures today on a four lane highway into town.

As we approached a stoplight one of them proceed to ride hands free while slowing down - not that there's anything wrong with that (insert Seinfeld witty remark) but what happened next absolutely floored me...... he took OFF his helmet...... while still MOVING... placed it on his gas tank before stopping at the light.

So I thinking bee sting, needs to say something to his pal, just cooling off in a very uncool way - but NOOOOOOOOOOOO....... he takes off from the light with the freeeking helmet still on the tank!!!!!! :duh:  :duh:   Proceeds to ride on into town (55mph zone) with the helmet on the tank.  Guess the damn gas cap will be protected now.   :annoy:  :annoy:  :annoy:

 :bomb:

I was following a couple on an Indian last fall, when suddenly the passenger started pulling on the driver's head, and the bike starts swerving! :wtf:   Well she pulled his helmet off and stuck it in the saddle bag, and did the same with her's.  Then I realized we had just passed the Welcome to Pennsylvania sign--no helmet required.  Apparently, they were in too big a hurry to pull over, and their beanie helmet was too restrictive to wait for the next stop sign.  Needless to say, next straight I put them far behind me.

I'm particularly fond of the guys driving around with the nice expensive custom-painted-to-match-the-bike helmet that never leaves the helmet lock. It's just too darned expensive of a helmet to risk getting damaged whilest sitting atop one's head.

I personally don't care if there are helmet laws or not.  I'll always wear one, and if someone doesn't want to, go for it, just one less squid on the road  :bigok:

I'm all for no helment laws. Think of it as population control for the 21st Century. If you have difficulty operating a toaster, there's no point in wearing a helmet.

It's more fun to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow.

Some people believe the difference between wearing and not wearing a helmet is a hospital ventilator(spelling?).

I like the "custom choppers" ..NOT!  anyway,  $30,000 bike $20 helmet.  The more the bike cost the less the helmet does.  Hmmmm?

My friend's dad has an illegal "helmet" with a fake DOT sticker on it.

He's real proud.

Wait'll he crashes . . . he'll show THEM, huh?
Ever noticed that they don't make helmets out of bone? There's a reason.

 So, not one of you at any time ever goes helmetless?  Not even for a 10 mph cruise around the hood on a hot summer evening?  Never?  Ever?

I ain't buying it!

Due to my "condition," I wear a helmet everywhere I go . . . bike or not! :monkeymoon:

I certainly used to, but not any more.  A co-worker of mine just had an in-town accident that almost killed him.  I don't even think twice any more.  Used to zip to the store and back without it, but I can't rationalize it anymore.  Watching this poor kid's family standing next to him in the ICU because he took an un-neccesary risk (I know there are inherent risks with motorcycles, and everywhere in daily life ...not trying to start a holy war, mind)  It just hit really close to home :(

Well, that would sort of mentally clobber you.  I don't know what percentage of the time I don't wear it.  I live in a sedate middle class neighborhood that's real quiet and calm; laidback.  I will cruise around literally at 10 mph and less just kinda lookin' around at who's doing what or what progress has been made on the new house here and there and waving at the neighbor kids on their scooters.  It's a situation where I virtually never see another vehicle on the road.  I really enjoy it.  If I go out of the neighborhood, I pull the helmet out of the trunk and suffer with it.
