1st thread! B4 bogs on mid to full throttle
« on: June 08, 2010, 11:00:20 PM »
1st a bit of history:  5,000 miles, all stock, all original 1991 bandit 400.  I bought it from the original owner that had it in storage for many years and it was last started in 2004.  So over the last 7 weeks I've rebuilt the bike and have been having loads of fun.  I flushed all of the fluids, rebuilt the brakes, new fork seals, flushed the tank, new plugs, new air filter, new rectifier, and new battery.

I've disassembled the carbs, cleaned the jets, and replaced all of the o-rings.  The bike fires up immediately with no problems and once warm settles in to a nice steady idle.  However, there are two problems.  The first is that when the bike is idling and you give it sudden throttle input the bike will die.  But if you give it throttle slowly it will be fine.  This is a relatively minor problem but it may be a symptom of something that needs adjusting.

The second, and most critical, problem is that when I'm riding the bike and I apply a heavy dose of throttle in the lower and mid range the bike bogs and the revs up very slowly until 8k rpm or so then takes off like a bat out of hell.

In my research i've found people that says a bog on full throttle means too lean and others that say too rich.  I think it is either the float height is too low or the air/fuel mixture is out of whack.

Again, the bike is 100% stock.  Any suggestions?

-Float height should be 14.5, no more, no less.

-Mixture screws to 2.5 turns

-raise the needle by moving the washer on top to underneath the e-clip

-synch carbs

I appreciate the info.  I currently have the washer on top of the e-clip - can that make a big difference?

It will help with the famous b4 lean spot in that location.

Are you talkig about the plastic washer that lays on top of the eclip? All I would have to do is put that plastic washer underneath?

Or is it better to use shims?

There should be a metal washer on top of the e-clip.

Move that one underneath and in between the plastic washer and e-clip.

Well, I guess that may be my problem. My setup is the black plastic cap>spring>plastic ufo shaped plastic washer>e-clip>white plastic spacer under e-clip

Unless I'm not even talking bout the same thing. I just bought my bandit

If that's the case: just go to Radio Shack and get a bag of washers from the electronic parts section.

Use the ones that will fit under the e-clip but not interfere with the width to shim up the needle.
