Author Topic: Bandit V runs better when weather is cold. (Read 3747 times)

Hi guys, I have a bandit 400 V/Vs, its runs fine just thought I'd have a play and make it run better with the scorpion race can I recently fitted. The bloke in the shop said that i wouldnt need any rejetting so up to present I havnt bothered.

The bike seems to run as good as with the stock exhaust, with maybe a little hunting on idle. I was told a +5HP gain would be possible, if set up correctly.

The bike seems to be running rich though, lots of carbon build up on the end of the can and also you can kinda smell the carbon / petrol in the exhaust fumes. Anyway, a couple of weeks back, I had to ride to work early, it was quite cold and damp. The bike seemed to accelerate faster and rev easier. A friend says this is because air is denser when cold, so maybe meaning the engine is getting more air, which is may need.

Ive not changed the stock air filter, but cleaned it, and lightly soaked in oil about 3000 miles back, do i need to replace the filter, possibly run without to test.

Any sugestion guys. I dont fancy rejetting, but could do if it'll help.

Running a little better when it's cool is normal but running much better is a sign of a rich mix. The aftermarket can should flow more and cause the opposite effect. Did the guy mess with your guy mess with the carbs at all? Maybe try a K&N filter?

Hey mate pull your air filter out of the air box and and run the bike down the road see if it runs better if so your to rich and jet accordingly!

I pulled the air filter out not the air box and the bike died over 5000RPM, should i try it without the air box or the air filter? The guy didnt mess with my carbs, I have a standard bike apart from the full race can.

Ok bike is not rich, since i dont have a air box. Does the bandit have a snorkle that air comes in from to the air box? if so take a peice of duct tape and cover half that hole up , and go ride tell me what that does

Not quie sure if the air box has a snorkle. It has a piece of plastic that guides the air into the air filer, apart from that its a totally sealed box. There is a large diameter tube comming from the carbs which kinda sits over the top of the air box and doesnt connect to anything, I thought that may have been a breather or summin.

If the bikes not running rich, as from my understanding it would run better with more air into the carbs (air filter removed). The air filter hasnt been replaced since I got the bike 2 years ago, and probally wasnt replaced for a few years before that. The filter doesnt look dirty, smells a bit. WOuld I notice any difference if I replaced the filter? Ive checked the price, and its £24.95, bit expensive really for a student budget!

correct me if im wrong , does the airfilter sit towards the rear of the tank just in front of the seat is it round and bolts to the air box? Some one take a pic of this damn thing! "If the bike is running rich it would do good with more air running thru it IE removing the air filter" weve established yours is not rich there for buy taping some of the spot that the air comes in we where gonna make it a bit richer to see how it runs with out ever having to jet the carbs , just as a reference , you can not run around like that with tape on stuff it was more to give you a idea of where to go with the jetting if it needed to be jetted and buy that i might have been able to give you a jet recomendation! cheers

Yeah, Jay - it sits to the rear of the tank. Here's the schematic....

The snorkle is the tube running inside the top section from the air inlet.

tape up some of that hole where the air comes in , remember you are making this richer so be gentle with the duct tape!

Mine is the V/vs model 1996. The air box is totally different. See photos.

I taped up half the hole, and it fun better than with the hole totally open, upto about 7000rpm then died. I think I'll just buy an new air filter, see if that makes a difference.

But, also see the carbon all round the exhaust. Hmmmm, should it be like that.

Also ne1 know where I can get a cheap air filter, only price ive got is £24.95.

put the air filter in and tape up some of the air filter hole , that hose is a crank case breather and goes to the air box
