2001 Gsxr 750 front end swap
« on: March 21, 2013, 06:54:11 PM »
Hello, I recently decided I was going to put 2001 GSXR 750 front end on my bike. It is also a Winter project since its still snowing here in Canada... Hopefully not for long. I just got all my parts finally at my house so now I will be able to put it on the bike. I may need a new upper head bearing since the GSXR 750 stem has a 30x55x15 bearing but I am going to see if i can just switch the stems from my bandit to the GSXR triples. Otherwise i will have to buy a ALL BALLS fork conversion bearing which is 50$ shipped.
This is what I started with, I was able to find straight fork tubes for $160 I didn't have to buy the top clamp because I was lucky enough to have 1 at work from a previous parts purchase and that happened to be in it. That saved me around $60-80

This is my rim(Straight!!), calipers, brake master, clip-ons, and brake pads, It also came with rotors which I had taken off to clean the rim to get it ready for painting. I got all that for $330

All that was left was my Lower triple tree and axle to come that I bought off of Ebay. The lower triple cost me $30, axle $7, and shipping $25. This picture is with everything together since I couldn't wait to assemble it, Although I still didn't have my rim painted in this picture.

Really sorry about the TERRRIBLE picture's but I will take my sister's camera to take some REALLY nice one's once I'm done. So far this swap has costed me $552 with the cheapest part's I could find while still being straight and usable. I will have to make new brackets for my cluster, and headlight but that wont be a problem. I was thinking of buying a koso gauges but they almost cost as much as my swap LOL.... I also still need to buy a front fender which ranges between $30-80 but im waiting on buying one around $20 locally.

Once it warms up a little I am going to install all of this on the bike. Next weekend it should be around 8-11°c(around 47-55°F) So I'll have more pictures then and good ones this time!

Is there an All Balls bearing kit that will use the stock GSXR step? Most guys I know press out/in the stems.

Yes, All Balls has a bearing. It's 30x47x12 it comes with a washer to get the height right. This is the all balls part # 99-3540-5 and it will work for years 96-2009. Possibly even newer if the new stems are 30mm ID.

http://www.allballsracing.com/99-3540-5.html

It costs $29 for the bearing and another $25 for shipping to Canada since I cant pick it up locally.

I also changed my Rear turn signals to match the front since the are smaller and nicer shaped. Just so sick of south western ontario. so flat here. Hopefully I can leave for japan soon!!

So, it was an easy swap using the All Balls kit? You didn't press the Bandit step into the GSXR triple? Any problems?

I wasn't able to press the bandit stem into the GSXR triples since once was press fit and the bandit used a cir-clip and was loose in the triple. And I didn't want to waste the money on the all balls kit. I was searching all around here for the bearing but it didn't exist. SO in the end I found some Chinese upper bearings. They were like $4 a piece so I have extras for future projects :D because this front end is coming with me to every bike I'm going to own. It's just to good to give up. But it was an easy swap after I got the bearing in. I just made some custom headlight brackets which also allowed me to move the headlight closer in.

Here are some picks of the bearing. The outer race is really thin since its a 12(H)x30(ID)x47(OD) instead of the stock 15x25x47. I did not have to put a washer for in between triple and the bearing. The bottom bearing is just the normal 17X30x55. I had an all balls bearing in that size laying around so I used that.
Here are some pics of the bearing.

Heres a comparison between the bearings

I did a very similar swap on mine but I just swap the stems over. You can't use a B4 stem as its welded into the lower tree. Well it was in mine. So I just used a different stem all together.
Cost me about £300

For future reference for anyone else thinking of doing the swap, you can get the All Balls conversion bearing from here -> http://shop.marksman-ind.com/99-3540-5-30x47x12-taper-roller-bearing-32906-15086-p.asp

Its comes with the seal and jack up washers - £14.36 + VAT

I've bought one for fitting the K4 750 USD Font end to mine

Cheers

Chris
