2G petcock?
« on: November 01, 2007, 05:47:10 PM »
Does anyone have a spare 2G (2002) petcock? Maybe someone who's upgraded to a Pingel unit? I just got a call from the bike shop, and the tech says the interior has been pitted somehow, and it needs to be replaced. I figured I'd try here before shelling out $80 at the dealer.

You are not alone.  I had the same problem on my 02 1200 and several others have reported that they had the same problem with stock petcocks leaking.

Fuel leaked past the petcock and contaminated my oil twice before I figured our why it was happening.

My 3 options were:

1. Buy another stock one (new or used)
2. Upgrade to a Pingel
3. Install an in-line valve between the stock petcock amd the carbs

Although option #3 was by far the cheapest and would work fine, I went with a new Pingel and I am glad I did.

It is an easy to use manual petcock with reserve.

Replacement parts are available if they are ever needed.

It is beautifully made and it cost no more than the stock part.  (like jewlery for my bike)  It is so nice to look at that it is almost a shame that it is hidden from view.

In my opinion, a stock replacement is a poor second choice and the replacement might fail too for the same reason that the original one failed - it just is not as well made as the Pingel.

An addes plus is that, if theft is attempted, my bike won't start unless the fuel tap is opened.  In this modern day of automatic fuel valves, most thieves probably would not know that they needed to turn on the fuel to start my bike.

My opinion:  Just buy the Pingel.

Good luck,

Dave:
Do you have the Pingel part number for that petcock ?? I have an idea that I should maybe replace the p/c on my 2.5G......just for shytes and gigles....and, as you say, a good first-line anti-theft device, too !!!

Wow great news (at least for solving my problem). My 02 1200 has developed the same thing - leaking past the pet cock down into the crank case. First time was crazy when I went to change the oil - gas all over the place.
Question do you have to mod the tank for the pingle unit?
Second quick question - how come the floats didn't stop the gas?

Thanks in advance,
GeorgeJ

They should have.

Red01 is right. The floats definitely should have stopped the gas from entering the crankcase - but at least one of them must have leaked very slowly.  In both instances the bike had been parked for extended periods.

Yes, the hole in the tank must be enlarged slightly with a rat-tail file to provide clearance for the screened filter on the petcock.

Drain the tank and flush with water, then dry with compressed air before filing to minimize risk of fire.

It was an easy job and, since then, no leaks.

Good luck.

Thats what I was thinking (floats).  Well I'm gonna order the pingle and get it done. Tired of having to peak into the site window to see if its totally full then I know Im hosed.  It was weird cause I never would have thought the valve would fail like that. Untill I drained the carbs one nite cause I was gonna pull them to change the pilots. So the next morning I popped a drain on one and it was full again. I never put two and two together that that would lead to gas n the crank.  The local dealer said "oh yeah bike musta been sitting on he side stand and number one float is mess-up".  Well he was rite about the side stand but never mentioned the fuel valve.
Oh well mystery solved.  Thanks for all you help folks. Now the next project is to jet the bike. 12K miles and I'm gonna yank the carbs to check/adjust the valves anyway.

:thanks:
George

Shortly after I bought my 02 B12 (after my second ride), I noticed gas pouring from the airbox.  One of the floats must have been stuck open, in addition to the petcock.  I had rode it several miles like this and it locked the engine up.  I ended up paying for a total top end rebuild and my bike was in the shop for months because of a part ordering nightmare.  What a mess.  Now I have noticed an oil drip from the #4 carb (from L to R) and am wondering if something is going wrong again.  Any ideas?

Isn't the hole in the tank threaded to receive the petcock?

I don't recall threads...my '01 has a gasket and two screws. (Note the pingel requires an adapter plate that takes the threads of the valve and provides two bolt holes).

So I'm joining this thread after starting another one on Christmas day because my case was full of gas.  Seems like my answer was already here.

The Pingel petcock sounds like a great idea, and I'm planning on doing it.  But the part numbers now have me a little confused.  The application chart on Pingel's website lists two different Bandit (1200) parts:

http://www.pingelonline.com/powerflo_application_chart.htm

The first is actually listed in the HONDA section as a 2002 Bandit 1200 (1st Line under the Honda section) and is, as Dave pointed out, 4221-AH.

BUT, under the Suzuki section it lists 3211-D-AH or 3211-D-CH for ALL Bandit 1200's.  Perhaps this is why you had to file your tank, Dave?  Maybe the 3211 part fits without mod?

Any thoughts?

From what I see on the Pingel chart, the 4211 is for the 600cc Bandit, and the 3211 is for the 1200.

That sounds right and matches the chart I linked to as long as you ignore the "Honda" Bandit 1200...  :monkeymoon:

BikeBandit's schematic shows only one outlet on the petcock, and the Pingel 3211-D has two.  What's the deal?
