B1200 Rev counter flickering
« on: March 04, 2012, 03:40:58 AM »
Hi
My GS1200SS rev counter has started to flicker.

If I am running at steady rpm you can see it give one flicker about every 5-10 seconds.
It flicks up about 500 rpm then settle straight back down.
There is no stuttering from the engine as the rev counter flickers.
It even does it as the bike sits there idling.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Richard

What year us your bike? Gen2 and up have electronic instruments. I had my speedometer do something similar when I power washed the speed sensor.  :banghead: I paid $50 for a new one and it's been great 5 years running. If it's electronic (2001+) then the tachometer takes it's reading from the timing plate. However it could be the tach going but I doubt it. Could even be just a short in the wires.

2005 Bandit 1200, Modified Holeshot Stage 1 with 17.5 pilots 2.75 turns out, and 110 mains 5 shims. Muzzy Slip on w/mid-pipe, stock filter. 1.5" hole in the airbox lid.

Hi
2004
The tach wouldn't take any signals from the coils would it?

I don't know there is a manual you can download here in the "downloads" section. If it's a 2004 then the tach is electronic which may mean it's just a loose wire. Maybe if possible trace the wire from the tach and see where it ends up. Maybe it's kinked or the insulation has worn through somewhere. Since it only happens once every 5 or 10 seconds I would say that's probably the culprit. Also check once you've traced it the connectors from the coil or timing plate to the guage and back to make sure they are just not a little rusted. If it's a plug like the speed sensor you can unplug it and clean the connectors. Put a little vaseline on the plug leads and tape or shrink tube the connections so they are water tight and you should be good to go. If it was totally screwed you'd either have no RPM reading on the tach or it would go bananas like my speed sensor.(I doubt I was going 200 at a stoplight ) A simple loose or rusted connection seems the likeliest. I couldn't find a pic of the instrument cluster, however since the GS1200SS is basically a Bandit with slightly retro styling I can't see it being much different. Do you have a pic of the instrument cluster? If not, if there is no cable coming from the tach to the top end of the engine then chances are it's electronic.

Hi
Solved this one.
"I am running DYNA mini coils and I had swapped the 12 volt live wires on to the wrong terminal on both coils.
Should have checked a bit closer. The Dyna coils will run wired in reverse but not as well their site tells me.
So although the bike run it was doing something to the electrics that was causing the rev counter to flicker.
There you go a result.
Thanks
Richard

Nice good job on the troubleshooting. Sometimes its good to go through the wiring if it's weird I've done all kinds of shit that I picked up and fixed second time around.
