Clutch/transmission problem

02 600s, 7800miles on it.  Not a trouble out of it ever.  Rode all day yesterday fine, and started out today fine.  Came to a stop sign, it was in neutral, I pulled in clutch and put it in first, and the bike jumped and died.  I though maybe I had slipped off clutch or something, but then when i pulled in the lever again it was totally limp, like no resistance to it at all.  Its raining so I have not had a chance to take anything apart yet.  Any ideas or suggestions?  It has not been slipping, or had any kind of gear trouble at all.  It starts up fine in neutral, but the minute I put it in 1st or 2nd it jumps and stalls, like im not holding the clutch at all.

Probably a cable issue.

Put the bike on the center stand, pull in the clutch and put it in first. If the wheel's spinning madly while you're holding the clutch lever, your cable has too much slack. Grab some small wrenches and adjust the nuts when the cable goes into the transmission.

Thanks for the quick reply, it quit raining here so I got to go out there and look at it.  I toke off the cover that the clutch cable goes too (not sure what its called) but where you can see the sprocket and front of the chain.  And the long metal rod that goes from the end of the clutch line to inside the engine was broke in half.  I am pretty sure thats what caused it lol.  Looked on a oem parts site and it lists it as Clutch push rod.  Also going to get all the little pieces associated with it, mine look worn out (some bb's fell out of the clutch release section, behind the plastic cap on the clutch cover lol)  I can put some pics up in a few minutes, just in case I need to do something special or something else to look out for!

Oh, that blows. I was hoping it was just some slack -- occasionally a really hard jolt can knock the cable locknuts loose.

first one is the broke rod (looks like it has been broke a while, where it joined at was real dirty, not shiny new like it just broke) second one is the whole where the rod goes into (lol i know its dirty back there, i never toke off cover.  Its clean now, spent all day yesterday dedirting lol)

That sucks but it shouldn't be too hard to fix.  Gives you an excuse to clean out all the dirt and stuff too.
