Hesitation on hard throttle - & Loud pipes it now seems
« on: June 14, 2009, 02:19:24 PM »
Missing or hesitation (feels the same either way) on HARD throttle only, just showed up last few days.
The bike hadnt been used for close to 2 weeks with a low fuel reserve, I'm wondering if there could be some crap in the carbs/jets from stagnant fuel?.. The other thoughts i had was the chain, and more possibly the sprockets slipping.

I had the cahin checked out (visual yesterday) and I was told it looks good. I put some carb cleaner in the tank and did a small amount of riding round town, on regular runabout speeds its fine, just on really hard throttle, (y'know" the fun times!")

This has never happened before FYI.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Check the air filter and the plugs. In my experience, dirty and bad fuel usually shows up first at smaller throttle openings rather than on the main jet, but a clogged air filter from, say, a wasp's nest or a family of mice will definitely hamper performance at WOT. If the plugs are getting old they could be causing issues as well.

Start with fresh fuel, check the air filter, and drain the carb bowls. You might have picked up a little water will may now be sitting in the bottom of the carbs.

Start with fresh fuel,
I changed the plugs prior to this symptom happening, about 3 weeks prior, seemed ok shortly afterwards back then. Took it out a few days ago (thursday), used hard throttle once or twice on a short trip and seemed fine, only showed up Friday/Saturday. Put carb cleaner in Saturday with full fresh gas, only did a bit of riding afterward and symptom was still there, but maybe not quite as much?, but perhaps I was being too conscious of how I was riding and being soft on the throttle as a result.

I will check my plugs tomorrow (gaps and cleanliness)- although the gaps seemed to be good (used gap tool) right out of the box when I got the NGKs, the filter I swapped out, only because I hadn't swapped it last spring, and thought it would help and it was just sitting on my shelf anyway( still looked good ) Is there anyway I put the filter upside down?.. is that even possible?.. paranoid now!

I've never emptied my bowls before, so I'll try and get my buddy Bazza to help on that. but even so, would not a clog/crap water be a potential temporary issue and subject to evaporation or all the cleaner eventually being pushed through and doing its job?

Snub....

I would start with checking plugs. They are usually the tell all.

Pretty hard to put an air filter in wrong and really it would work both ways anyway. (By the way, I am now a sub micronic contaminant specialist :bigok:)

Incidentally, you know the problem we have seen with Cylinder #4 air/fuel mixture? There was a similar problem reported in a past issue of Cycle world that I saved somewhere. (This could be part of the problem) Something to do with contamination in the float stop.

I don't know how free I will be this week but give me a call tomorrow after work and I will see what we can do.

Missing or hesitation

Turns out twas crud in one of the the float bowls causing the hesitation on HT, plus my idle screws also needed opening up 1/4 still for better idling.. The carb cleaner helped too once it eventually got thru the system. Thanks for everyones tidbits!. Thanks for all yer help baz! ..

Oh still love the Feejer. It's just a different fun.

I don't miss the Bandit 6 hours into a highway ride! I miss it around town and on short rides though.

                                                               :downhill:

I see you’re still  :soapbox: pushing the same old barrow :banghead: around, hey Bazza. :stickpoke:
The same old same old,  :asshat: give us some fair dinkum, science, proof, even try some tiny snippet of logic, you still haven't  :deadhorse:  . I respect you have a point of view. But  if ya gonna keep on pushing that same old barrow  :blah: around again  :blah: and again  :blah: and yet once again  :blah: , please bring forth, some real, tangible substance, to your argument. :rant2:
                                                               LIKE EVIDENCE.

I'm living proof, that in fact "loud pipes do save lives" so is my missus.
Come to think of it, My twin boys can thank loud pipes, so to can both stepdaughters.
Thats 3/4 of our direct family still alive due to loud pipes. :crackattack:
I could sit here and waste a shyte load of time and make a list of all the indirect family still alive due to loud pipes.
The brother inlaw his wife, the uncles of the twin boys, my stepfather my mother my aunt, my grandfather, and grandmother blah blah blah..... :stfu:

Hey Bazza Ya know why the cops around these parts don't actively come down on loud pipes :toofunny: , because even they know, "loud pipes save lives". :duh:

For those who missed the rebuttal there were some links provided to address/counter the LPSL point of view.  I wanted to repost them for anyone who cares to read them.  I don't have a dog in this hunt - my pipe could be considered loud, I don't like the attention it draws, but I do like the performance and got a great deal on it.

Anyway... read away if interested and if you want to comment take it to a new thread or re-open one of several already in place.
