Holeshot slip vs mileage?
« on: July 03, 2009, 10:01:39 PM »
Didnt see this in the threads anywhere sorry if I missed it. Has anyone tried the holeshot 17" slip on and noticed what the difference is in mileage versus the stock? By the way just tried a Shinko Raven on rear and its seems decent for about $60 less than the Conti Road Attacks been using. Im getting about 37 mpg in city and about 50 mpg highway with stock, and is the holeshot slip on kit really that easy to install? Thanks in advance. :thanks:

"slip on" and "kit" are two different things.

Since you mentioned "17 inch", I assume you're referring to the muffler.... but....

The "slip-on" refers to a less restrictive performance muffler.
The "kit" is typically a carburetor performance modification.

Best do some more research, both subjects are extremely well covered here.

Im just refering to muffler and pipe, thinking about doing it but wondering what the decrease in mileage might be?

With a well disciplined right hand any mileage difference would be negligible. I have a full exhaust and stage 1 jet kit with timing advancer and have still returned 60mpg in cruise mode. Once you get on the pipe though, all bets are off

Sip on will make little difference in mileage, jet kit will make a huge difference. 10-30% less. (My bandit saw 30% less)

If anyone tells you different, ask for physical before & after proof.

I put a PC-III power commander (A jet kit for Fuel Injection) on the FJR and tuned it only for smoothness. Stock pipe, stock everything got me a 13% reduction in fuel mileage.

If you have a B-12, the pipe alone will make you run very lean.

Got the 17" comp 1 slip-on on. Sounds great, nice and throaty, not too loud. Made immediate difference in performance. I was second guessing myslef if I should have ordered the "street core" slip on, made me wonder if the comp 1 was too loud but it aint! High recommend.

I Did the comp 1 Slip-on and stage 1 jet kit, saw a 20% reduction in mileage, no matter how much adjusting to mains/pilots or idles we did. We took some of the shims off the needles ( from 5 to 3 ), and that did indeed make a small improvement, maybe gained back 10%. No difference in performance with the pipe only, just added noise levels ( sounded good at first, after a while got on my wick! ) :banghead:

Pipe by itself, really no difference, but if you do the pipe only, she will run extremely lean, keep an eye on your plugs, and prepare for alot of popping on decel! (unless you do the PAIR removal), even then you will get some.

In retrospect, and after hearing both types of pipes, If I had gone with the street core version, I think I would of been happier and the pipe would still be on my bandit today. I often thought the comp 1 was too loud, tried to convince myself it wasn't ( to justify expenditure), but when I finally got honest with myself, it truly was too loud, for me anyway. You'll need earplugs more often, especially on long jaunts, forget about the removable DB killer Dale offers, it's useless, it makes strange whistling sounds at certain RPM.

If you are going slip-on with Holeshot, go Street Core. Your ears (now and long term) will thank you.

As far as Harleys a go, when they come from the factory, they don't sound too bad, it's when 99% of the owners do mods to the pipes they sound obnoxious.

Wow 30% drop in mileage eh? Thats significant. Thats always one of the perks for riding a lot, is the gas savings.
I really like my comp 1 slip on, dont think its too loud, well so far anyway.

I did a little ride with my buddy who has the only stock piped Road King in existance today. I could actually hear it over my FJR and all the wind noise while riding on the highway, but they sound rather good stock.

I've got the 17" street core and Dale's Stage II (pods) jet kit.  Experienced a whopping 2 mpg(US) drop.
That's only 5%, Bazza.  :stickpoke:

Everett Elevation, 110 feet above sea level
Edmonton Elevation, 2200 feet above sea level

Could be the Canadian Spec Bandit? could be the elevation?, try jetting a bike at more than 2000 ft. Both Bazza and I got significantly reduced mileage, well, enough to complain about anyways. He went with Ivans kit I went with Dales, so I doubt it had anything to do with the brand of kit. My wife's B6 got Dales kit in it, installed by a dealer, and saw about 15-20% reduction in mileage, in fact she often has to gas up before I do, or sometimes the same time. :annoy:

However, her bike was even leaner than our B12's, and the B6 responds so much better to the install than the B12 does by comparison, so I have left that kit in place.
