small elctrical prbelm on a 96 bandit 600
« on: June 24, 2005, 11:59:49 AM »
Gage Problems Jim Just got a 1996 bandit 600
the bike runs well and charges the batter well but
The Speedo works but not back lit the RPM gage no light and not working
The turn single indicator lights are the only lights on the panel that work
So no hibeem indicator no neutral light and no oil light
I checked the harness at in the faring and every thing looks conected
My guess it a bad or lose wire some place any ideas where to start looking
And yes all the fuses are good

Ouch.  I'd try cleaning the plug connectors, then start checking the wires for breaks, or shorts.
A multimeter with audible continuity tester would come in handy.

I don't know off hand what all wiring is bundled together in the harnesses.....but I'd supect a trashed bundle of wires, that maybe got pinched, or cut...or worse.

It's not overcharging, is it?   Not sure if the instrument lights would be the first to go if the voltage were too high..
  All other lights OK?

The 96 (and all 1G B6/12) uses little light bulbsfor the idiot lights and backlighting. Since the tach light works and not the speedo, that may just be a bulb issue. The other lights may be bulbs or a shorted/open in the harness. Look around the steering head and under the tank for wear on the wire bundles.

I've had this problem myself and you can find it under the black wire cover. I unplugged the harness and removed the gage cluster and fixed it on the bench. Half way up the wire cover you'll find a connection thats made just bad.

On my 98 1200, I have a fuse that keeps blowing. When it blows, I have no netual light or back lighten for the tack or speedo, and because my shift light is tied in to this same circuit, the shift light doesn't work. Have not had time to look for the problem.
If I didn't have a Suzuki, I would have a Kawasaki

Water gets in the wire cover from the top and its taped at the bottom :duh:   not to smart IMHO

But yes its been talked about before .

I took pictures when I fixed mine but can't find them

Just pull the gages off and cut that cover you'll find it right there, halfway between the gages and the harness plug.  :beers:
