Is it ok to ride past the first 1000km (600mile) service?
« on: April 25, 2009, 10:01:34 AM »
Guys, my 2008 GSF650 was due its first service at 1000km (600 miles). I now have 1200km (745 miles) on the bike, due to work it will be 7 days before I can take it to the garage to get the first service, which is free.

Would riding the bike in the mean time cause any damage to it or should I park it up in my garage until I get it serviced next Saturday?

Its my first bike so I'm not very knowledgeable. If it is ok to ride it, realistically how many more km or miles can I safely ride on it without causing damage?

Thanks

You'll be fine to ride it for 7 more days.

Thanks, would it be ok to put another 600km (372 miles) on it, or do you mean fine for another seven days of short trips?

Considering the first service is an oil change and a check to be sure nothing is coming loose, you ought to be fine.  Might want to give it a quick once over yourself to check critical fasteners, like axles, foot and hand controls, brake calipers and the like.

The air/oil cooled models has a valve adjustment check at first service, too, but many dealers ignored it.

My 1k service ended up happening at around 2k because the dealer was to busy and I was riding to much. No adverse effects here

I personally believe the 600m/1000k mark is too early... except for one thing... oil changes.

I changed my oil at 300 miles, again at 600, and then took it in for the "600 mile service" at about 1200 miles.

I just don't think everything "seats" in just 600 miles.

The engine should have exploded at mile 601 !  Consider yourself lucky.  Just truck the bike over to the dealer for the 600 mile service and you'll be OK.

I did the same, I was also lucky.  I think I took mine in at 1200 miles.

NEVER drive your bike after the 1000kms you could rip a hole in the time/space continuum and suck the entire earth into a black hole!!

Thats all the dealer will do anyhow. Just make sure it doesn't void your warranty.

FWIW, as long as you can prove the motorcycle has been serviced regularly and according to the factory schedule, the warranty will not be affected.  Does not have to be by the dealer, does not have to be done by a factory certified tech, doesn't even have to be done by a shop, just has to be done.

Now for my plug, as a factory certified tech I can do whatever you need! lol
